Create a versatile base layer
This is a major key when getting dressed for a hiking adventure. A short-sleeve or long-sleeve top and leggings make a great base.

Keep your legs covered
Unless it’s extremely warm, it’s best to wear long pants or leggings. As you hike, your skin will come in contact with your surrounding. Help prevent scrapes, scratches and insect bites by keeping your legs protected.

Invest in outerwear
The final layer will make all the difference. Depending on the weather, go for a lightweight jacket or insulated jacket—you can always tie it around your waist when not in use. Hikes typically last for an hour or more, and in that time the weather can drastically change, especially if you’re climbing in altitude.

Keep your shoe game proper
Since hiking can involve uneven terrain, hills and even sand, it’s important to wear hiking shoes or hiking boots that have excellent grip. Bonus points for water-repellant options, too. Wear one (or two!) pairs of socks to help prevent blisters and keep your feet warm during those chilly months.

Pack a bag
It’s crucial to be prepared during long hikes. Here are some essentials to tote around in your backpack:
- Water bottle
- Bug repellant
- Sunscreen
- Lightweight jacket or pullover
- Hat
- Snacks
