As you prepare for baby's first bath, here are some things you might be wondering:

When should I actually give baby the first bath?

After baby’s umbilical cord area is completely healed, you can start bathing your newborn once every few days.

What should I use to bathe my newborn and where?

You can use a small tub that fits within a standard tub or the kitchen sink.

How often do I bathe my newborn baby?

Once every few days is fine, since water can dry out their delicate skin.

Step 1

Gather the supplies you’ll need before, during and after baby’s bath. This includes:

  • A small tub
  • Scoop
  • Washcloths
  • Bath toys
  • Spout cover
  • Bathtub elbow rest
  • Bath kneeler
  • Towel
  • Baby robe
  • Gown
  • Coverall
  • Bodysuit

Helpful hint: Lay out a towel and clothes (plus a clean diaper, too!) within easy reach for when you’re done.

Step 2

Fill the small tub with a few inches of warm water, testing it on the inside of your wrist to make sure it’s not too hot. Your baby can be burned in water that’s too hot.

Step 3

After baby’s all undressed, ease them into the tub starting with the feet, making sure to support their neck and head. Initially, your baby may cry since they’re not used to being in water, so don’t be alarmed!

Step 4

Using a scoop or cup, continuously pour water over baby’s body to keep them warm. You can use a small amount of mild soap to clean their scalp and body, using a washcloth to gently wipe your little one from top to bottom and front to back.

Step 5

After rinsing and wiping your baby clean thoroughly, carefully pick them up and out of the tub, again supporting their neck, head and bottom, onto a dry towel.
Helpful hint: Wet babies are wiggly babies! Make sure you’ve got a good grasp and are holding them securely as you lift them out of the tub.

Step 6

Quickly pat dry and wrap them into a little bundle with the towel to keep them warm. Make sure you’ve dried all their little folds and creases, since damp skin or moisture may cause irritation.

Step 7

Finally, get them dressed in a fresh new outfit and they’re good to go!
