Harlen Coben has become one of those suspense writers whose latest book is a lock for the best-seller lists. Sadly, that is not a guarantee of quality. Coben's series hero Myron Bolitar was at least original, a sports agent and part-time sleuth, but his sidekick, Windsor Horne Lockwood III, the title character of Win, was completely over the top, a rich hedonist with a homicidal streak who watched Myron's back. Even classic hard-boiled outlaws like John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee had self-imposed limits; Win had few if any. Coben's problems in Win are making his over-dog protagonist believable and putting him in any kind of jeopardy. Ultimately he fails at both, leaving the improbable plot involving Sixties radicals and Win's family members to collapse. If you think Donald Trump is a sympathetic figure, you may be able to buy into Win. Otherwise, avoid him. One and a half stars.
