Better Than I Ever Could Have Hoped

This is the type of book that leaves you hollow after you finish it, spent a solid 30 minutes sitting and staring into space after I read the final chapter.

Have I Ever Really Loved Anybody Before?

Sorry but if you aren't leaving me love letters throughout time & space then I literally don't want it. More sapphic sci-fi romance IMMEDIATELY.

Really appealing to my inner chem girl

OH MY GOSH, can I just like obsess over this book for the next few lines? LIKE OH MY GOSH. Amazing. Stellar. Breathtaking. Other positive adjectives. The concept is just so captivating. The way they send the message, and everything is just so genius and makes my heart and brain so happy. yes, some of them I'm like, would that work...but I DON'T CARE because just something about it makes me so happy. Also the end of each chapter before the letter when the looming figure ingesting the letters is described it is crazy, I can always picture it so clearly in my mind. The relationship that grows throughout the letter exchange is so interesting, watching the growth of the two characters, and their views of each other change is really something else. I loved learning about the Agency and the Garden, and I did think the world-building was super interesting, and how they were able to weave in so many different aspects I would have never thought about it through jokes (or attempt at humor lol). The writing is also immaculate. It is just such a beautiful book. Do yourself a favor and read it.

Exceptional

I've been having difficulty finishing novels recently because they just don't grasp my interest like they used to. I devoured this book though, and once I finish this review I'll do it again. While this book was hyped a lot on social media, I don't think any description I saw did it justice. Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone craft a truly wonderful story with likeable characters, good action and espionage scenes and subtle world-building. Readers are made to genuinely care about their relationship through brief vignettes and letters. HIGHLY recommend. Seriously.

gorgeous!

I absolutely loved this book. Went bonkers for it. The plot is complex and intrincated, but not too hard to follow, even though, as a sci-fi novel, it deals with some very complicated issues regarding the mechanics and consecuenses of time travel, but it does so in such a way that the science-y detalles are unimportant, and one as a reader carestía only for the action part, which is compelling as can be. The characters are beautifully written, dinamic and multi dimentional. As the story progresses, we watch them evolve and unravel in unexpected ways, and the time travel element allows to compare them constantly to the way they were a while ago. This is the perfect, bite-sized, cozy, stunning enemies to lovers! action packed and full of romance, the relationship between the characters is so well constructed it seems fated, so tender and sweet you'll need to see a dentist afterwards.

dissapointing execution

I was so excited to read this, but was ultimately disappointed. it was a bit hard to follow at first, but once you catch the patterns you keep up easily. I feel as though this book was built on a great idea and premise, but was lackluster in result. I truly think this could have been fleshed out more to create the gorgeous whirlwind of science-fiction entangled romance i expected, but it was not. it’s a quick read if you have it on hand, but not something i would recommend anyone to buy :(

one of my favorite books ever

this is one of my favorite books of all time! its super short and the world is so incredibly high sci-fi that i don't think i could ever truly understand everything there is to understand about this story. regardless, it is a masterpiece. in such a short amount of time, the authors made me care so deeply for the two main characters. i absolutely sobbed my eyes out on the first read, i was so deeply impacted, and i still have deep memories of that reading experience. i own three copies of this book, and i would recommend it to absolutely everyone. i know the level of sci-fi is a struggle for some, but if you can put that aside (even if it's still confusing) the character work in this story is absolutely worth it. this book changed me, which is always the best and my important kind of book, for me personally. i just adore this book and these characters so much! go read it!!!

Unbelievable

This is possibly the strangest book I’ve ever read. I actually ended up doing the audio and I did the whole thing in one sitting, which isn’t hard since it’s less than five hours and the narrator is pure magic, such a soothing, soulful voice I loved it. I can see why this book is so difficult for so many people. First of all it’s almost totally written in poetry, which makes no sense, I actually don’t get or like poetry but that might have helped me out here. The love story of two women on opposite sides and completely opposite species if you can even qualify them as that of a time war. The whole book takes place in the letters between these two women. I think it’s gorgeous. I think it’s totally innovative. I’ve never read anything like it and I’m not sure I ever will again. if you are not into hard sci-fi or haven’t read a ton on time travel I think this will be really difficult because it kind of blows past a whole very intricate world that they don’t dive into - you’re literally just with these two characters in a complex world that is not explained AT ALL - falling in love. If you love hard sci fi and want the ins and outs of the world this isn’t what you’re going to get. If you’ve read enough that you’ll blindly believe most things and can immerse yourself in another world… this might be for you. Lyrical poetry magical realism w/w romance time travel fever dream. This isn’t for everyone. There were times I wasn’t even sure it was for me.
