Finding Strength during Bad Times

Wow. I feel like this book was part of Britney Spears' re-birth and cleansing. I am not now, nor have I ever been a super-fan of Britney Spears, the artist. I mean, I like some of her main stream music; but, I never would be one to go out of my way to find a Britney song; although her duet with Sir Elton is a great one. That said, as a person, I always thought what her father was doing/did to her was a miscarriage of justice. I never realized that the conservatorship had lasted 13 years; OMG to be under someone's thumb and be scrutinized 24/7 for that long would have had most people going insane and proving that the conservatorship was warranted. This woman found faith and strength to just keep moving forward and finally reclaiming her life. Way to go! Truly a very good book, and as a woman, you can feel all the injustices and double standards that she was bombarded with. I am glad that her fans, her music and her faith all were able to bring her to a good place.

Don't Misjudge Her

Do I recommend this book? Very much so! Reading such memoirs reminded me how we often don’t have all the puzzle pieces of a person and, thus, we often misjudge them. I am hoping that such reminders will allow the reader a humbling experience. Also, I see how The Woman In Me became number one for biographies at GoodReads for the year 2023. If I had read it in 2023, I would have also voted for it!

Heartbreaking story

Heartbreaking story. I have been a Britany fan for a long time like many girls, I have followed her since her rise to fame. I have watched all the documentaries so when this book was announced I pre-ordered it immediately. Hearing all the things she endured over the years and how she has been treated is heartbreaking. It is eye opening to see her accounts of what she went through and there were many things I hadn’t heard before that were surprising.

a perfect memoir

For such a highly anticipated memoir, the really delivered as walk through of Britney's past. The stories chosen to include in the memoir helped to build a fuller picture of someone most of us already feel we know. The editors/ghostwriters managed to make the cohesive and well plotted without too much of a heavy hand. This felt like sitting down and listening to Britney tell her side of things after being silenced for so long. The audio by Michelle Williams is perfectly done.

Not great writing, but honest voice

This audiobook was read well by Michelle Williams. It mostly followed a linear timeline of Britney’s life that was easy to follow. The writing was at times repetitive and was consistently simplistic—events were not vividly brought to life. There was a surface-level reflection on her experiences but a lack of emotional depth. Perhaps that is telling in its own way, indicating a lack of development during her pop star teen and young adult years—and potentially trauma from untreated postpartum depression, the constant stalking and harassment from paparazzi, and the long conservatorship. She did share some insights (and anger) about the different standards for women and men in the entertainment industry, and there was a heartbreaking and almost brutal honesty in this book that impacted me. After growing up alongside Britney, seeing the constant media frenzy—and the Free Britney movement years later—it was interesting to hear her story in her own words, especially since she had no voice for so long.
