Fun summer read!
This book caught me so off guard y’all. I had heard everyone hyping it up, but didn’t expect to love it as much as I did! I though this was a really unique take on a romance book. I loved how the story came together at the end with the past and current POVS. To me it felt like a grand reveal that really brought the story all together. Slow burn, enemies to lovers, what more could I want? It was the perfect summer book club binge read.

Enjoyed as a reader & writer.
• Writers • Former friends-to-Enemies-to-lovers • Forced close proximity Former friends and coauthors, Katrina Freeling and Nathan Van Huysen had huge success with their previous co-written books. Due to unknown reasons, their partnership and friendship came to an abrupt halt just before the release of their novel. Years later, they’re obligated to reunite & fulfill their contract, staying in the same Florida beachside getaway in which they collaborated before. Can they see past whatever tore their friendship apart long enough to complete this final book? Will they remain enemies or can this project rekindle their friendship...and maybe something more? Things I loved about this book: -The chapters are told in alternating POV, with flashbacks cleverly interspersed to slowly reveal what ended their partnership years before -As a writer, I enjoyed reading the descriptions of their co-writing process -The steamy tension -The fact that this novel about a couple writing together was written by a couple Highly recommend!

Expected more.
Y’all, I was so excited for this one… ☹️ <- me when I finished THE ROUGHEST DRAFT by Emily Wibberley and Austin Seigemund-Broka. I’m a big fan of romance, writing, and reading about the craft of writing, so I figured this would be a win for me. Sadly, I struggled to connect with the characters and get into the book. I enjoyed the book’s actual prose because the authors have a wonderful sense of language. But I really wish I connected with the story more. The last two chapters redeemed the story, not the overall experience. I know the story wasn’t meant to be whimsy - hey, I don’t need all my romances to be whimsy - but that was when the characters felt the most real to me. I felt like a lot of Katrina and Nathan’s story was pieced together, and when I finally connected with them, it was over. Poof! Done. The pacing was a big issue for me. The story didn’t flow well - this is coming from someone who loves a flip-flopping timeline. And maybe I’m broken, but I would feel some tension, some passion, then it would dissipate. The only scenes I loved and appreciated were the exchanges of the written word for editing - to me, these were best in the entire book. Even in the end, the steamy scene lacked payoff, even though I admit it was cute and fit with the story. But after all that time, I don’t want cute; I want some spice especially with the passion this book was attempting to build. I would have DNF it, but I finished it because it was a book club pick. Even though I’m meh overall about it, I am glad I read it. The ending was cute. I liked their writing - I mean it when I say they had exceptional prose, so I’ll give this duo another chance. Content Warnings: emotional infidelity

Second chance at romance
The Roughest Draft provoked strong feelings in me as I struggled to figure out what had gone wrong between Katrina and Nathan. They were supposed to be writing another book together, so Katrina's fiancée pushes her to write with Nathan and Nathan agrees to his publishers demands. I thought this was going to be more of a romantic comedy, but it was a deep novel filled with introspection and dialogue that had me struggling to figure out what was going on. The strong feelings between Nathan and Katrina are tormented by one or the other of them being in a relationship with someone else since they met. This story is more about the writing process behind two people who take the journey to forgiveness and healing to see what is on the other side. Thank you to Berkley Publishing, NetGalley, and authors Emily Wibberly and Austin Siegemund-Broka for this review copy for me to read and enjoy. #berkleywritesstrongwomen #berkleypublishing #netgalley #bookstagram #newrelease #arc #books #slowburnromance

Meh.
Technically this book is a romance, but it didn’t feel like one. The two timelines felt unnecessary so much of the book felt forced. It also didn’t help that the romance didn’t come into play until well over half way through.

Romance
They were famous for writing books together.. but one day their luck ended and they had to go their separate ways.. Katrina Feeling and Nathan Van Huysen were writers who wrote NY Times hits.. Almost all were best sellers and it looked like there was no way to go but up.. But after their best success, they parted ways and their lives fell apart. After 3 years they are forced to reunite and work in one more book.. Only problem is their lives have changed. They go back to the Florida town that helped spark their creative juices in the past. They hope they can at least it can happen one more time.. they need it to happen.. As the writing begins they can barely work together and as time passes they get into a groove.. they become close again. They remember the past and hope the future can be better. A lot is riding on this and Katrina and Nathan, have to decide to invest in themselves and in their careers.. or can they have both? Such a cute story. Of hope and love. Facing the past and forging forward.. the writing is very good and this was a 4 star read for me. I want to thank Netgalley for my copy of The Roughest Draft, for an honest review. It was a pleasure to read and review.. I hope you enjoy it too!!’

lovely, angst filled, tension++++
I loved everything about this book! From the characters to the story and everything in between. Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka have written a smart and touching novel about love, friendship, and the thin line between fiction and reality. I love how they intertwined past/present and paralleled the story within a story - brilliant! Kat and Nathan are a dynamic duo - best friends and writing partners - they are each other's "person." They've written two best selling books and are contracted to do a third, with one tiny little problem - they haven't spoken in three years. After completing their second book together, their friendship and working relationship came to a sudden head and resulted in an abrupt and painful ending of all contact. So much has changed over the course of their time apart both-professionally and personally - that when they reunite to fulfill their contract and complete the third and final book, things are "tense" to say the least. While it may be awkward and uncomfortable for Nathan and Kat, it is a delicate slow burn for those of us reading their story. We're treated to a lovely dance of tension and tenderness. Push and pull. Snark and sweetness. As Nathan and Katrina work through their issues, they also work through the characters of their book. The symmetry between the two does not go unnoticed, but it's woven in so seamlessly that the recurring theme of "fiction or reality?" is felt in the main characters as much as it is in the characters they are writing. This book had major Emily Henry "Beach Read" feels to me (which is a compliment - I love that book!) There was a big emphasis on the art and skill of writing... insight into the dynamics that go into each draft of a story. Wibberley and Siegemund-Broka write a beautiful love story into a fictional book that felt incredibly real. Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
