MAAS, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Seventeen-year-old Kiva Meridan has spent the last ten years fighting for survival in the notorious death prison, Zalindov, working as the prison healer. When the Rebel Queen is captured, Kiva is charged with keeping the terminally ill woman alive long enough for her to undergo the Trial by Ordeal: a series of elemental challenges against the torments of air, fire, water, and earth, assigned to only the most dangerous of criminals. Then a coded message from Kiva's family arrives, containing a single order- "Don't let her die. We are coming." Aware that the Trials will kill the sickly queen, Kiva risks her own life to volunteer in her place. If she succeeds, both she and the queen will be granted their freedom. But no one has ever survived. With an incurable plague sweeping Zalindov, a mysterious new inmate fighting for Kiva's heart, and a prison rebellion brewing, Kiva can't escape the terrible feeling that her trials have only just begun. The Prison Healer

The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni is a phenomenal book with a creative and suspenseful plot. Noni is an incredibly skilled writer who easily captures the attention of the reader and uses specific but thought-provoking details that allow one to envision the compelling setting of the prison. Her unique writing style differs from other fantasy authors, and it makes this dark book series even more special. Furthermore, this dynamic story describes seventeen year old Kiva, who is attempting to survive the difficult conditions of Zalindov prison and helps others as the prison healer. When the Rebel Queen is captured, Kiva must keep her alive long enough to face the Trial of Ordeal, and she allies with others to accomplish her goal. In addition, Kiva knows that the Rebel Queen will not survive the trials and volunteers to take her place in hopes that they will eventually both be freed. Adding to the dangers, Kiva faces an incurable plague spreading throughout the area and a chaotic prison rebellion. This plot-driven story fills the reader with different emotions like sorrow and fear, which makes the storyline very interesting. Although there were some gruesome events in the story, there were also several surprising and unpredictable twists and turns. The story included moments of romance as well, which enhanced the plot without overshadowing it. My favorite character, Kiva, is strong and independent with a desire to heal and assist many people, even those who do not necessarily deserve it. I admire her courage because despite being so young, she was forced to witness many horrible events and endure terrible grief. I also enjoyed learning about Kiva’s relationships with a young boy named Tipp, a considerate guard, and a mysterious inmate. It was fascinating to see her grow mentally throughout the book and slowly open up to those around her as she developed connections with the other characters. In fact, the personalities of characters like Jarren, Tipp, and Naari each served a different purpose and added to the uniqueness of the story. Furthermore, the book explores important ideas of survival, loyalty, and the harsh realities of prison life. Noni’s usage of vocabulary leaves an extremely powerful effect on the reader and shares valuable messages. One of my favorite quotes by Noni in the book, which deeply resembles those ideas, was “Our scars define us. They tell us a story of courage and survival. They tell of who we are at our deepest being, of the challenges we’ve faced and overcome.” This quote refers to how Kiva’s survival in the cruel prison of Zalidov has changed her identity and is a reminder of her strength. It emphasizes how the experiences and challenges we face shape our character, which readers like me can apply to our own lives. Also, I was very intrigued by the cliffhanger at the end of the book, and I am eager to read more of Lynette Noni’s works in the future. I strongly recommend that you begin reading this entertaining book series.

Full of intrigue, adventure, drama, and secrecy!

I have had this book on my TBR for a while now, probably as long as it's been published, finding itself on my lists for challenges and checked out from the library, only to be returned. So it's safe to say this reading was a long time coming. Kiva's story was arresting from the get-go, and I found myself intrigued as I read. I liked several supporting characters, and Tip was a great addition. However, there were a lot of loose ends that were tied up a bit frenetically. I still enjoyed it enough to read the next book in the series. I need to know what happens in the story now that Kiva is free from prison. Despite the bit of loose ends, I found this book to be a quick and enthralling read. Very entertaining, with the perfect amount of action, a little romance, and some secrecy!

Slow start for me but ended with a bang

3.75 stars. Honestly, it took me a while to get into the story. There were a few moments with Jaren that had me smiling and I didn’t hate the story. I was bored at some parts. It did pick up for me and I enjoyed how the story progressed and each plot twist that was revealed. It was very well written and I will definitely continue.
