Read the cult-favorite coming of age story that takes a sometimes heartbreaking, often hysterical, and always honest look at high school in all its glory. Now a major motion picture starring Logan Lerman and Emma Watson, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a funny, touching, and haunting modern classic. The critically acclaimed debut novel from Stephen Chbosky, Perks follows observant "wallflower" Charlie as he charts a course through the strange world between adolescence and adulthood. First dates, family drama, and new friends. Sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Devastating loss, young love, and life on the fringes. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it, Charlie must learn to navigate those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up. A #1 New York Times best seller for more than a year, an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults (2000) and Best Book for Reluctant Readers (2000), and with millions of copies in print, this novel for teen readers (or "wallflowers" of more-advanced age) will make you laugh, cry, and perhaps feel nostalgic for those moments when you, too, tiptoed onto the dance floor of life.

Beautiful

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a widely beloved novel, and after reading it, I completely understand why. In hindsight, my only regret is not reading it sooner. The story is told through a series of letters written by Charlie, a freshman navigating the complexities of high school. An introvert and social outcast, Charlie's world is further complicated by the recent death of Michael, his only close friend. However, his life takes a turn when he meets Sam and Patrick, two seniors who, despite their own issues, take Charlie under their wing. Throughout the novel, Charlie's character is shaped by his relationships with Sam and Patrick, as well as his own personal struggles. As Charlie bonds with them, he begins to pick up some unhealthy habits, yet one constant throughout the book is his love for reading, encouraged by his teacher, Bill. Bill recognizes Charlie's intelligence and potential, which further emphasizes the depth of Charlie's character. Despite the challenges he faces, Charlie remains kind, intelligent, and thoughtful. The novel also delves into Charlie’s emotional turmoil, including his deep feelings for Sam, which she recognizes but asks him to let go of. The complexities of unrequited love and the pain of growing up are captured with remarkable sensitivity. As the story progresses, Charlie grapples with his mental health, and it becomes increasingly clear that his inner struggles are far from simple. A devastating revelation about Charlie's Aunt Helen adds yet another layer of heartbreak to his already difficult life. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an exquisitely heartbreaking novel, filled with unexpected twists and turns. The rawness of Charlie's experience and his emotional journey make it difficult to believe that so much pain and growth could occur within a single year. This novel is not only a reflection on the struggles of teenagers but also a powerful exploration of trauma, love, and healing. I firmly believe this book should be considered a staple in schools. It offers invaluable insight into the human condition, encouraging readers to empathize with the heartache of others in a way that is both eye-opening and transforming. As someone who is typically a tough critic when it comes to five-star reviews, The Perks of Being a Wallflower perfectly exemplifies the kind of book that deserves such a rating.

Mental illness in book form

This book gave me an existential crisis and it radiates comfort. I am currently crying. This book feels like an entire experience that is unendingly sad but great. I see why people call it a modern classic. 10/10

Great book

The book was amazing. I felt the storyline was original , though very realistic. High schoolers could easily find something in the book to relate to whether it’s having a friend pass away, not knowing how to fit in, having family issues, mental health issues, having a small close friend group, friend arguments, literally anything. Most high school books are read, had unrealistic stereotypes, though this book seems real and not exaggerated. I would definitely recommend this book.
