The Pearl: Godsend or Devil

Believe it or not; but, I have never read (listened to) a book by John Steinbeck. He was not one the required literature books for my English/Lit classes in high school or college. On a whim I downloaded this short story of his. This story may be short (approx. 96 pages); but, it packs a punch. There is a lot about the "human condition" that plays out in this tale. In a few ways it gives a nod to The Lord of the Ring and how in that story the powerful ring could corrupt it's owner/wearer. In Steinbeck's story it is the Protagonists lucky day (or is it) when he finds beautiful, huge pearl and hopes to finally have enough money to help his infant child and his entire family. A great story about how wealth can definitely change the lives of those who have struggled to get out of poverty, for the better, or does greed of those around them make their lives more hellish now, than it ever was before?

I had to read the book and I hated it. Others may like it but I found it boring.
