Author and garden lecturer Ellen Ecker Ogden was inspired to preserve the diversity of plants that are slipping away after learning that we have lost over 85% of the plant world in the last century to extinction. In The New Heirloom Garden, Ogden inspires us with a history of seed saving in this country, then guides gardeners of all levels to create their own heirloom gardens with tangible gardening tips, twelve themed garden designs, and detailed resources. The first half of the book shares specific garden plans, plant keys with descriptions, plant and seed wish lists, interviews with gardening experts, and even tips and tricks to handle your own local weather. The second half of the book contains 55 recipes for delicious entrees, sides, drinks, and desserts that can be made from each vegetable, fruit, and flower grown in your garden. It's a book designed for readers to bring to their local supply store, take outside into the garden, and then enjoy in the kitchen.

Great advice, ideas, and information

The New Heirloom Garden is split into two-three parts. The first part is Step by Step tips for a successful garden. This part includes inspiration, garden paths, soil, tools, etc. This section is packed full of helpful tips and inspiration. The next section breakdowns 12 different garden designs. Each garden design includes design notes, inspiration, tips, and a design key. The last section of the book is recipes. Each recipe “section” is divided by the plant family. Dispersed through the whole book are smaller wealths of knowledge like how to can food, find heirloom seeds, and interviews. There’s really so much information throughout that it’s hard to convey it all in a review. Additionally the photographs are beautiful, and recipes are well thought out. I’ve received a free copy from Harmony Books and Rodale Books in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Eye candy that delivers great information too!

The New Heirloom Garden is a beautiful work of art, first. Every page has an inspiring photo or garden drawing to inspire even the most reluctant gardener. I couldn’t help feeling I wanted to get outside and create my own carefully planned work of art. To help you not get in over your head, Ellen starts with good advice, to start with a long-term plan. This is so helpful if you’ve ever removed lots and lots of sod, only to lose momentum at the size of bare soil uncovered, and have weeds take over. Each step is detailed to help you succeed, and create a garden you can manage and be proud to have in full view. There are many interviews with seed savers and experts to learn from. No less than 12 designs to plan or get inspiration to make your own garden, all drawn to scale with tips for growing. Favorite heirloom varieties are described, and delicious, photographed recipes follow to show you new ways to use your harvest. This is a complete work that would make a terrific gift for yourself or any gardener/foodie you love. They will love you back!
