Millions of readers have fallen in love with Jan Brett's The Mitten, and over 2.5 million copies have been sold since publication in 1989. This striking oversized anniversary edition with a silver foil jacket and a fresh image of the woodland animals will attract fans old and new, and adult collectors of Jan Brett's books. Set in a snowy forest, the fun begins when, one by one, animals crawl into Nicki's lost white mitten to get warm until the bear sneezes, sending the animals flying up and out of the mitten. On each turn of the page, Jan hints at what animal is coming next in her signature borders, inspired by Ukrainian folk art.

Classic Russian Folktale

The description of the book states the illustrations are in the style of Ukrainian folk art. This is very appropriate because "The Mitten" is a classic Russian folktale. I first read the story while examining an elementary school reader when I was getting my master's degree in education. Some of the other graduate students did not like the story because the plot about animals crawling into a mitten lacked realism. However, I told them, "So what? This is a folktale for children." I plan to order copies to give as gifts to the children among my family and friends. With the war in Ukraine going on, it is important for children to learn about the cultures of Russia and Ukraine through a classic story from those regions.

Such a Captivating Story...

I read this book to my Grandchildren. It was one of their very favorites and they knew the story word for word. Now I read it to THEIR children (my GREATS!) and they too absolutely love it. The pictures tell so much of the story and the kids love to follow along. They, as well as I, never tire of this book.
