A New York Times bestseller with an "engaging narrative and array of detail (The Wall Street Journal), the intimate and sweeping (Raleigh News & Observer) untold, true story behind the Biltmore Estate the largest, grandest private residence in North America, which has seen more than 120 years of history pass by its front door. The story of Biltmore spans World Wars, the Jazz Age, the Depression, and generations of the famous Vanderbilt family, and features a captivating cast of real-life characters including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Teddy Roosevelt, John Singer Sargent, James Whistler, Henry James, and Edith Wharton. Orphaned at a young age, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser claimed lineage from one of New York's best known families. She grew up in Newport and Paris, and her engagement and marriage to George Vanderbilt was one of the most watched events of Gilded Age society. But none of this prepared her to be mistress of Biltmore House. Before their marriage, the wealthy and bookish Vanderbilt had dedicated his life to creating a spectacular European-style estate on 125, 000 acres of North Carolina wilderness. He summoned the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to tame the grounds, collaborated with celebrated architect Richard Morris Hunt to build a 175, 000-square-foot chateau, filled it with priceless art and antiques, and erected a charming village beyond the gates.

A Castle And A Family

I read “The Last Castle” in connection with a visit to Christmas At The Biltmore. It presents a saga as magnificent as the home. Built as by George Vanderbilt, grandson of Commodore Cornelius who established the family fortune, The Biltmore is advertised as the largest private home in the United States. The story of the Castle is intertwined with that of the family who built it. Inspired by his grandmother’s appreciation of the North Carolina Appalachians, George assembled an immense spread of worn-out mountains, on which he built the house and established a working farm with a business model of providing produce for the home and earning a profit by selling its surplus. The cost of maintaining and operating the property was overwhelming, even for a Vanderbilt’s resources. George was a scholarly bibliophile and philanthropist. His wife, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser, brought social standing, but little money, to the marriage. After first seeing The Biltmore after her wedding, she became its mistress, managing the home and, after George’s death, the estate. Their daughter, Cornelia, was the sole heir and princess of the Castle who eventually left Biltmore in the management of her then ex-husband, never to return. The story continues to the present generation who manage the estate as a tourist attraction. In addition to family, visitors to the Biltmore were legendary: Theodore Roosevelt, O. Henry, Canadian Governor General Lord Earl Grey and his Lady for a few examples. I recommend “The Last Castle” to anyone in search of insights into the lives of Gilded Age Rich and Famous, a case study of a visionary commercial enterprise or just a real-life fairy tale.

Ugh. Is there a story here?

Recitation of dates and meaningless social events. One of the few books I couldn’t finish because it is so boring. Like reading the phone book.

Excelllent glimpse into the gilded age!

The story encompasses the pre-planning for the historic estate, the persons behind the scenes, and the very elegant and wealthy owners themselves. Through this well-researched novel, it was interesting to hear of the benevolence of George and Edith Vanderbilt, they had a huge heart for others in their North Carolina community, which was remarkable and refreshing from persons within their social station. If you love history, the gilded age, and all the famous persons from that era, you'll adore this novel.
