The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is what really went down that night and the only person alive who can answer that is starr. Beautiful Masterpiece

The Hate U Give is a beautifully written and deeply moving novel that tackles urgent social issues with honesty and heart. I was truly impressed by how Angie Thomas wove together so many aspects of racial injustice and police brutality while still telling a personal, emotionally resonant story. Starr is one of the most compelling characters I've ever read. I felt her pain, her anger, her sadness—and her internal struggle to find her voice and make a difference. Her journey is powerful and relatable, regardless of your background. I also loved her parents, they were very dynamic having their own internal conflict and struggles. I love that these characters are flawed and human! This book had me in tears by the end. It’s powerful, eye-opening, and necessary. I love that it's being taught in schools—it’s exactly the kind of literature that sparks meaningful conversation and change. I fully intend to have my own kids read it one day. Stories like this are essential for helping the next generation grow up more aware, empathetic, and inspired to do better.

Tragically Beautiful

This book gives a voice to all of those that feel oppressed and lost in the inability to move up in the world. I feel as though, more often than not, people choose to bury their heads in order to not have to face others realities. Unfortunately, just because some don't want to see it, doesn't mean it is not a reality for others. I feel like too many people view the world like Haley in this book, and I'm not sure they understand why it's not ok. Every minute of this story broke my heart, especially because the world continues to play this storyline out over and over. This book needed to happen to force others to open up to what is really happening around them and give them a chance to be the change that needs to happen.

Great Book

If you read just one book this year, please make it this one. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, The Hate U Give follows the story of sixteen-year-old Starr and what happens when she becomes the only witness to the fatal shooting of a friend at the hands of a police officer. She then finds herself in the middle of all media, as she tries to balance two parts of her life and continue to seek justice for her friend. Did I enjoy reading this novel? My answer is yes, I enjoyed it a lot. I feel like it was very educational and purpose full. But there were also some areas where I felt joy, humor, and sadness. This novel opens up our eyes and changes your perspective on the world, because it is real life our world packed into one novel. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and the roller coaster of emotions that came with it. Would I recommend this novel? If someone wanted to see how the world is today and has been for a long time, then I would one thousand percent recommend this novel.

Highly Reccomend!

The Hate U Give, written by Angie Thomas, was one of the most complex and powerful books that I have ever read. This novel is heartbreaking, yet it told a very important story about such an awfully common occurrence. The topic of police brutality is so hushed upon, however, it is necessary that we talk about it, and this book helps you grasp an understanding of the unthinkable. The Hate U Give is told from the point of view of Starr Carter, a sixteen year old girl who lives in a poor neighborhood and goes to a fancy preparatory school. Naturally, the juxtaposition of her home life and her school life takes a toll on her because each world requires a different personality. After leaving a party with her childhood best friend, Khalil, they were pulled over by the police for no apparent reason, and Khalil was shot. Watching one of the best parts of her life disappear in just one second is so awful. Throughout this book, you learn a lot of things about Starr, but one of her most prominent characteristics is resilience. To go through what Starr has, and be able to pick yourself up again and make a difference is so admirable. Starr Carter is the definition of strength. Police brutality is such a difficult topic for people to talk about and that is why this book is so vital. For all of the families of the victims of police brutality, this book was a stepping stone that made them feel heard and it encouraged them to speak about their own experiences. It takes a lot of bravery to speak about such a sensitive topic which is why this book is so much more powerful than we realize. The title of this book, The Hate U Give, is a very key detail to the story. On the cover of the book it is written in an order in which you can see that the first letter of each word spells out T.H.U.G. The book commonly refers to Tupacs quote that spells out T.H.U.G. L.I.F. E. and it means that if we keep producing hate into this world, our future generations will continue to struggle. We must start spreading love, not hate, so that our babies grow up in a fair world and we must make a difference for them. This was such a moving book that really makes you think about the world we live in and how to make it a better place. The impact this novel has had on society is inconceivable and this is exactly the type of book that we need to keep reading and keep writing so that our descendants can live in a more just world.

Jaw Dropping!

I got this book for Christmas, and as a teenage girl I am not a big reader. This month I decided to sit down and read, and I could not put it down. The detail, emotion, and the realization you feel in this book is unbelievable. Angie Thomas did an outstanding job catching the essence of Black Voice, Experience, and Police brutality. Not only did she include hard topics, situations, and trauma, but she made the novel fun, educational, and a bit humorous! Starr's story is too real. It connects with the world we live in and allows insight on how it is living and surviving as a black person each and every day. Overall, do NOT refrain from reading this book. You won't be disappointed.

You have to read this book!

I couldn’t bear to put this book down! Based on a true story, this book is about sixteen-year-old Starr Carter. She grew up in the “hood” and unlike any other kid from where she lives, she can escape to a white suburban private school. She tries to fit into her two different lives, yet her world turns to shreds when she finds out that her childhood best friend, Khalil, has died at the expense of police brutality. The media becomes flooded with rumors about Khalil being a drug dealer or a thug. As her worlds begin to collide she can’t help but put her fears of her two worlds mixing aside and stand up for her childhood best friend. This is a serious issue in our world today. Racism and police brutality needs to be put to an end. This book is so inspirational and sets an example for all those who are facing these unjust punishments, that you shouldn’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and others like Starr did for Khalil. After reading this book I had learned more about what people like Starr had to face and I feel like this book had made me more aware about what is one of the world's biggest problems, racism. The novel The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas isn’t a solution to this problem however this book will give you more of a sense of what the black communities must deal with daily. Angie Thomas has written many other novels, as well as The Hate U, Give and I strongly encourage you to pick up this book and share it with friends and family.
