The Gates of Europe- A History of Ukraine by Serhii Plokhy
Product Details
Web ID: 15416328Serious and comprehensive work
A comprehensive and authoritative history of Ukraine, written by a prominent Ukrainian historian; the translation is excellent. The book is a balanced, factual "big-picture" account of Ukraine’s history up to 2015-2016 ( it was written before Putin’s invasion, of the country in 2022). It is, however, scholarly and textbookish in style, definitely, not a light beach read ( for those looking for a simpler book, I would recommend Oleksandr Palii “A History of Ukraine: Short Course”) I grade books as Buy and Keep (BK), read a library copy (RLC) and once I put it down I couldn’t pick it up ( OIPD-ICPU) This one is a strong ROC for anyone prepared for its academic style and a BK for anyone with professional interest in Eastern Europe.

Good General History
Should be read in conjunction with Polish and Russian authors. The author glosses over inconvenient facts like the role Germany played in creating the Ukraine state.
