Web ID: 14352378Great addition to an excellent series
The third book in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series continues to develop the wonderfully engaging characters, their relationships, and a secondary story thread from the first two books. This character driven mystery series set in the fictional town of Three Pines kept me reading late into the night. I will definitely be reading the remaining 16 books in this series. Although it can be read as a stand alone, I strongly recommend starting with "Still Life" the first book in the series and reading them in order. Highly recommended

My Favorite Three Pines So Far!
I'm well behind the party on reading Louise Penny's "Three Pines" series of mysteries, so my review won't have any new information for @Goodreads readers. But like a good meal or a wine I enjoy, I don't want to rush my reading experience, b/c one can only enjoy reading a great series for the first time only one time. In Book #3, Armand Gamache and his Súrete coworkers are called back to Three Pines b/c one of the village members died at a fun little séance that Bed-and-Breakfast owner Gabri dreamed up when he found out that a guest was a sometime-medium. Was Madeleine literally scared to death, or was it murder? This is what Gamache et al have to figure out. The side story involves Gamache's betrayal of his best friend at the Súrete for many years, Peter Arnot. Apparently, Arnot was deeply involved in the unsolved disappearances of many Native youth, and Gamache still has deep enemies at Súrete b/c of his, Gamache's, whistle-blowing. Is Agent Nichol one of them? It sure looks like it. As always w/ Louise Penny, I did not know the identity of the guilty party in Madeleine's death until told, and was surprised by it! The Súrete situation's denouement was riveting and surprising as well. Book #3 has definitely been my favorite so far, w/ the séance in the "haunted" empty house; the many educational discussions of ephedra w/ its origins and uses (remember, I'm a pharmacist!); and the well-constructed Súrete mystery as background to the Three Pines plotline. Let's not forget Penny's stellar way w/ words. Here's my favorite quote from this book: "Loss was like that, Gamache knew. You didn't just lose a loved one. You lost your heart, your memories, your laughter, your brain and it even took your bones. Eventually, it all came back, but different. Rearranged." '. 81. I'd give this one more than 5 stars if I could

Interesting Series
Being one of those people who did not enjoy reading mysteries, but only watched them on TV (think Masterpiece Mystery), I was surprised to find how much I enjoy reading the Gamache series. Read them in the order written as the information builds.

Each Book in the Gamache Series Gets Better
Each book by Louise Penny becomes my favorite, such as her third book in the series of the Chief Inspector Gamache mysteries. I have come to love this man and his way of thinking. Like a loving father, he brings out the best of his staff and wins over the people of Three Pines. I ordered the next six books in the series today. It brings him into my own life and he teaches me so many things. In this book I find that I need to write down some of his thoughts and words because they are profound.

Great book
All her books about three pines are full of twists and turns. Love Chief Inspector Gamache. He seems so nonchalant while he investigates the case but you know he is totally involved in details. I’m going to read all the books in the series.

Another excellent entry in the Gamache series
Another excellent entry in the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny. This is the third one and I’m reading them in order. I think I’m now officially hooked on this series! (I listened to the audiobook and the narrator, Ralph Cosham, did a fabulous job.)

Great series
There has been another death in Three Pines, but it is unclear if it was natural or not. Armand Gamache and his team are sent to investigate the suspicious death. I love the pace of the book and the intricate mystery. Armand is also going through some personal turmoil this time involving a previous case. The setting of these books is so inviting and the characters are very likeable. This series is very enjoyable and well written. I would highly recommend them.
