The victim of betrayal by friends and an insidious plot to hide another's perfidy, innocent young sailor Edmond Dantes is imprisoned for life at the island fortress of the Chateau d'If. After fourteen years, he makes a harrowing escape and works his way to the island of Monte Cristo, where he recovers abundant treasures whose location were made known to him by a fellow prisoner. Wealthy beyond imagination, Dantes sets about engineering the downfall and ruin of the men who stole his youth and robbed him of everything that he held dear in life. Written in 1844, Alexandre Dumas' colorful tale of revenge, hope, and salvation is one of the best-loved classics of world literature. This 2011 edition features the full unabridged text of the novel, with its kaleidoscopic presentation of historical events and intrigues on the European continent in the early nineteenth century. The Count of Monte Cristo is one of Barnes & Noble's Collectible Editions classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in exquisitely designed bonded-leather bindings, with distinctive gilt edging and a silk-ribbon bookmark. Decorative, durable, and collectible, these books offer hours of leasure to readers young and old, and are an indispensible cornerstone for any home library.

Translator

I think this may be the first time in my life in which I have bought a translation and the identity of the translator is nowhere given. Not a serious publisher. Also, type on the small side.

Great read. Lots of errors

I bought this to read as I had t read this story since high school in the ‘90s. The story is every bit as good as I recalled, but this particular version is fraught with typographical errors that are very distracting.

Beautiful book, but poor proofreading

I love the B&N collectible editions, and so far have found them all to be excellent on all points. This one, however, falls short in the area of textual errors. Perhaps it is a translation issue, or a proofreading one, but I am noticing several grammatical errors, misspellings, and even repeated words scattered throughout, and I'm not even a fifth of the way through it. I am the type who gets distracted by this kind of thing, so I sincerely hope they do a reprint at some point. Otherwise, though, it is a very nice edition and looks great on the shelf.

Favorite Book of All Time Done Justice

I actually finished the abridgment of this book first, which in comparison to the beautiful original by Dumas is pitiful to say the least. If you are on the edge of buying this book or not, although I am biased immensely, I cannot recommend this story of revenge any more than anyone else can. There is a reason this book is loved by many, and it’s up to you to read and enjoy the tale of Edmond Dantès the way it was meant to be experienced. The cover art alone is worth $25, if I am to be materialistic, and this is definitely something that I’ll keep with me forever.

My favorite book, but who translated?

My brother bought me this edition for Christmas a few years ago, because The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book of all time. I just finished rereading, and it was a delight as always; but when I started writing a post about it for my blog, I realized that Barnes and Noble does not credit a translator. I'm extremely disappointed in the lack of translator credit. Translating such a huge tome is no easy feat, and it takes a lot of art and skill to recreate the author's tone of voice in another language. As far as I can tell, Barnes and Noble does not credit the translator on ANY of its foreign language leather-bound classics editions, and that information isn't even available online. These books are gorgeous, but I won't be picking up any more without translation credits.
