SO ENGAGING TO THE MIND OF THE HORROR

I have been a comic book enthusiast all my life. When visiting to the comic book store, my eye always caught the cover of "Maus" and I always walked away with curiosity. I knew of the Holocaust since early on and as I grew older my curiosity grew stronger until I bought the series (2 volumes). Finally in my 50's did I get a first hand account of the Spiegelman's experience which led me through a journey of many emotions and understanding of our Jewish brothers & sisters. As I believe the events of 9/11 should never be forgotten, more importantly the Holocaust should never be forgotten. ALL generations should read this moving and inspiring book.

Haunting, Sad and Moving

Haunting, sad, but also educational. I picked up this book because I was told it was a fantastic read. It was. The art is great and depicts the characters as mice, cats, dogs and some pigs. The characters might be animals, but the meaning shines through. The Holocaust was a terrible time in human history and should be dealt with. We should all learn about it so we’re not destined to repeat it. I cried during this book. I didn’t think a graphic novel would make me so emotional, but I got invested in the characters. I wanted to see them survive. Art Spiegelman’s father is the main character in this book. The story is told through his stories to his son about his time in the war and concentration camps. The emotional fragility, the strength, and the colossal devastation are evident in this character, his situation and his future. It was painfully obvious this man saw stuff and it messed with him. I wouldn’t recommend this to a younger read, but this is powerful stuff and would be better for an older YA reader. It’s hard to read, emotionally, in spots, but worth the read. originally posted at long and short reviews

Amazing Read

I had no idea when picking this book up that it would grab me the way that it did. It’s so hard to put this down once you start. The scratchy, scattered art really drives home how bleak and desolate that period of time was for those whose lives were under constant threat of capture or death, and the hopelessness the prisoners must have felt as they were being held captive. Even if you’re not someone who is fascinated with history, especially World War II, this is a must read. Very few “comics” have really shaken me like this. And it was totally worth it.
