After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson, now available in paperback. Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she's back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer. But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation- Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case. Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders. But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners. When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for. The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims. This time, Stevie may not make it out alive. Too many plot holes

I’m torn. I wanted to love this book, but alas, I didn’t. Stevie Bell is a super sleuth and along with her friends, Janelle, Nate, and David they make a great team. Stevie ends up at a summer camp to solve a murder mystery from the 70s. Not just any murder mystery though -there were 4 bodies. Carson is the new owner of the camp and knows Stevie is the one for the job. A threatening start has Stevie wondering who knows her so well. Can she blow the lid off this box -case- before anyone else ends up dead….?? Without spoiling anything -there were a lot of plot holes. Like, A LOT. I hashed this out with a friend and there were a lot of gaps and nothing we could have filled in. The reader didn’t know much of anything until the last 10% of the book and by then I was kind of like “get to the point.” Moral of this story -don’t do drugs in the woods in the middle of the night.
