Not Quite As Gripping As I Remembered
It has been over twenty-five years since I first read The Alienist, the first of two historical thrillers featuring Dr. Laszlo Kreizler that were written by historian Caleb Carr. During that time the details of the plot had become hazy enough that I couldn't remember exactly what was coming next. I'll try to review The Alienist without getting too deeply into the complicated plot. Briefly, Kreizler and a motley team of his employees, a reporter who narrated the novel, and some maverick police department personnel were enlisted by Theodore Roosevelt, then head of the New York police commission, to hunt down the savage murderer of several boys involved in prostitution. (Roosevelt couldn't trust the corrupt detectives he commanded to investigate the case.) The Alienist was definitely not for the faint of heart or those who liked their books short and snappy. There were hefty doses of psychology along the way and Carr spent plenty of time introducing local color from the 1890s. The final showdown was so full of twists that it undermined the deeper questions that were asked in the novel. I'm giving The Alienist a weak four stars because I think some trimming and plot tightening would have made it a better book.
