The 1619 Project's lyrical picture book in verse chronicles the consequences of slavery and the history of Black resistance in the United States, thoughtfully rendered by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and Newbery honor-winning author Renée Watson. A young student receives a family tree assignment in school, but she can only trace back three generations. Grandma gathers the whole family, and the student learns that 400 years ago, in 1619, their ancestors were stolen and brought to America by white slave traders. But before that, they had a home, a land, a language. She learns how the people said to be born on the water survived. And the people planted dreams and hope, willed themselves to keep living, living. And the people learned new words for love for friend for family for joy for grow for home. With powerful verse and striking illustrations by Nikkolas Smith, Born on the Water provides a pathway for readers of all ages to reflect on the origins of American identity.

Read this if you want your child to have empathy

^^especially your white child. There’s a lot of reviews speaking of “lies” and “fabrication” in these pages. They say this because they are uncomfortable with the truth and don’t want children to understand our country’s true history. This book is rich in FACT and illustrations. It weaves together a quick timeline of the slave trade and the journey black people had to endure in this country, through the eyes of a little girl who doesn’t know about her ancestors. This book is a learning opportunity for young and old (clearly some of our friends in the review section need to actually read it and read more on the history of slavery). Nikole Hannah-Jones worked hard to do research and not only create this treasure of children’s literature but also the 1619 Project. Read it! Work through the uncomfortable feelings and learn the real history and how it’s impacted today. You won’t regret it, you’ll be better for it.

Fabricating History

It may have beautiful artwork, as per past reviews, but this story is a total fabrication. By studying the history of Africa, one will learn of the actual event that preceded the slave trade. Writing like this for children is a disservice and is called brainwashing.

Nonsensical Fabrication

Not historical fact, but supposition of what " may" have been? Academic propaganda filtered to tour child's level. Make sure you've fully digested the adult book, then ddcide if it appropriate to pass along to your kids.

Wonderful! Truth for all ages.

This is a great book to read to all children, regardless of color or ethnicity. Adults could learn a lot from this, too. The truth may not always be comfortable, but it is still true and needs to be out there for everyone.

Amazing

This is such an amazing book. I’ve been wanting to read this book since it first came out. I finally did and let me tell you it is worth it. I don’t really have the worlds to describe the emotions it brought out of me. I totally cried. It’s a must read for everyone.

A story that is a gift

I am a retired high school English teacher working as an adjunct at a local college. I have a class of high school seniors taking Comp 2 for college credit. I brought the book in to share with the class. It is such a beautiful book with illustrations that bring in the child being read to. It is such a rich book with poetry that sings the birth of a strong people. It celebrates the characteristics of a human race that was born on the water. I read the book twice. At the end of class, a young child of color asked if she could borrow it for the weekend. She had tears in her eyes. She told me it gave her a story. I told her to keep the book.

Beautiful Read

I just bought this book and read it to my 9 year old tonight. We both loved it and cried. She asked questions. The illustrations are so beautiful and the words are powerful.
