From New York Times bestseller Kody Keplinger comes an astonishing and thought-provoking exploration of the aftermath of tragedy, the power of narrative, and how we remember what we've lost. It's been three years since the Virgil County High School Massacre. Three years since my best friend, Sarah, was killed in a bathroom stall during the mass shooting. Everyone knows Sarah's story — that she died proclaiming her faith. But it's not true. I know because I was with her when she died. I didn't say anything then, and people got hurt because of it. Now Sarah's parents are publishing a book about her, so this might be my last chance to set the record straight... but I'm not the only survivor with a story to tell about what did — and didn't — happen that day. Except Sarah's martyrdom is important to a lot of people, people who don't take kindly to what I'm trying to do. And the more I learn, the less certain I am about what's right. I don't know what will be worse: the guilt of staying silent or the consequences of speaking up...

Emotionally intriguing read

This book was incredibly hard to put down!! Even though I've never had to experience a school shooting, this book pulled every inch of emotion out of my body. The narrator, Lee as well as all the letters from the other survivors left me speechless. It felt like I had read letters from my friends because of how well Keplinger developed an indescribable feeling inside me. It's like I could indirectly relate to the experience the characters went through. This book mentioned many of the survivors feeling guilty for what happened on the day of the shooting which made the book even more emotional. I started reading this book just a little before a shooting happened near where I live. It was devastating hearing the news, but I'm happy I decided to finish the book soon after. I cried when reading Keplinger's story because it brought such emotion to erupt inside me. Even with the overflowing emotions, after reading "That's Not What Happened," I saw the world with a new pair of eyes. In my opinion, the message of the book was how the truth can be hidden and forgotten if lies/rumors were repeated. This made me see the reality of the world - the world that can make up a story just so that everyone else enjoys it even if it's a complete lie. The overwhelming fact that came up in me after reading this book was that no one really wants to speak or let alone hear the truth anymore. Lies have overpowered the truth and after reading this book I hope that one day, integrity and honesty triumph. I would definitely recommend reading this book because it really is life-changing.
