Brought me to tears--so beautiful and important

Oh—this was so lovely it actually brought tears to my eyes! I don't read a lot of children's picture books these days now that I have a teen and a tween rather than little ones clambering on my lap for a story. However, this title was so beautiful and the cover art so cute, that I had to know more. Sulwe is a little girl, inspired by the Oscar winning author's own experience, who is struggling to find beauty in her midnight-dark skin. In this gorgeous story, little Sulwe learns about the dual beauty of night and day after a magical journey into the night sky. This book most assuredly belongs on every child's shelf. For some children, it will give them words to articulate their own beauty. For other children, it will give them words to call out the beauty in one another. After all, we are at our most beautiful and precious when we celebrate both our own beauty and that of those around us.

My heart cant take it!

I'ma 16 year old black girl and I really wish I had this book when I was in elementary school (because I used to be darker and I hated my skin color). This book made me so happy and I want to let all my black friends borrow this so we can have a discussion about how dark skinned people are treated. This warmed my heart and I'll probably be buying it.

Absolutely Beautiful

I just purchased this book a few days ago for my little girls, and I absolutely love it. It is now one of my favorite children's books. Vashti Harrison is an incredible illustrator, and the pages are beautiful and enticing to look at even without reading. Lupita Nyong'o was so wonderful in sharing her story. I still cannot believe an actress that I always deemed so beautiful had trouble seeing that herself. I highly recommend this book!
