When Strega Nona leaves him alone with her magic pasta pot, Big Anthony is determined to show the townspeople how it works in this classic Caldecott Honor book from Tomie dePaola.Strega Nona—"Grandma Witch"—is the source for potions, cures, magic, and comfort in her Calabrian town. Her magical everfull pasta pot is especially intriguing to hungry Big Anthony. He is supposed to look after her house and tend her garden but one day, when she goes over the mountain to visit Strega Amelia, Big Anthony recites the magic verse over the pasta pot, with disastrous results. In this retelling of an old tale, author-illustrator Tomie dePaola combines humor in the writing and warmth in the paintings as he builds the story to its hilarious climax.

Deep and meaningful folk tale story, full of heart

"Strega Nona" by Tomie DePaola is beautiful children’s' book with a deep and meaningful folk tale story that is full of heart. The story is all about a healing witch named Strega Nona, who is like a magical Italian grandmother problem solver for folks with health problems, or people looking for love. Strega Nona is an elder in this story, so she hires a young man named Big Anthony to help her with various tasks around her home and gardens. The story takes place in a lovely Italian town in Calabria. This story also has a good message of accountably for children, as demonstrated by the mistakes of Big Antony and though his difficult lesson of having to eat all of the pasta is of course a metaphorical one, it does teach children there are consequences for choices one makes. Strega Nona’s love and patience for Anthony in giving him a second chance to learn and grow, is also insightful for children. This incredible book contains heart-warming characters, I also appreciate the Catholic nuns and the coming together of a community to help one another. This story has silly moments, sweet moments, and brings you characters that you can relate to and care about. The illustrations in this book have a nostalgic feeling to them, with humour and warmth. These drawings take you back in time, and bring the characters and community to life. This is a great story that inspires the creativity and magic of a Childs imagination!
