The poignant and fascinating story of a young man who is caught between the breakup of the traditions of a northern Japanese aristocratic family and the impact of Western ideas. Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels himself incapable of understanding human beings. Oba Yozo's attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a "clown" to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

Overall wonderful work of writing

This book is overall a great work, but has some graphic and misogynistic themes. It's a depressing read, but an amazing experience.

I think I need to re-read it...

Even though I was excited to read No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai, I found myself disappointed. I do not know why. I mean, I like it.... but I was definitely expecting maybe a little more?? Or I do not know... One of my friends absolutely loves and appreciates this book. However, I will see if I re-read it to see if I change my mind. The book is not bad; maybe I was in another mindset or time (I was younger when I read it). Let's see if my mind changes or my opinion remains the same. Nonetheless, I would recommend it to others to see if their opinion is the same or opposite to mine.

He's a bad person

I enjoyed reading this book from the author's (main character) perspective. It flows like he's talking to you and there's a few breaks in between when he moves to the next segment of his life. Its a semi quick read, it took me longer because I had to google the words I didn't know lol. I would say the main character is a bad person, he makes bad decisions and it keeps setting him back. This book was very different from what I usually read but I loved it.

Devastatingly Beautiful

By far, it's one of my favorite books I've read. This book was wonderful, the writing was splendid and impactful. It's worth the read, but beware if you are sensitive to topics involving depression, suicide, substance abuse, rape, and sexual assault.

very interesting.

I loved this book, but i don't think i understand it enough, considering I'm only 13. I will definitely re-read it when i'm older, assuming i will be able to understand it better. From what iv'e heard, its a very sad book. It definitely had lots of mentions of suicide. To be honest, i only found out about this since i watch Bungo... but i would love to start reading more of his books. I may have missed some parts, since i read it mostly at school. But, it was very Very interesting. I think some people (including me tbh) can relate to some parts of the book. (The character contemplating life for example.) I 100% recommend this book, if you watch bungo or have ever felt disconnected/ostracized to those around you, or just life in general.
