A noted neuroscientist reveals groundbreaking research on how fitness and exercise can combat mental health conditions such as anxiety, dementia, ADHD, and depression, and offers a plan for improving focus, creativity, and sleep. Jennifer Heisz shares paradigm-shifting research on how exercise affects the brain, finding that intervals of intense workouts, or even leisurely walks, help stop depression and dementia, lessen anxiety and ADHD, and encourage better sleep, creativity, and resilience. Physical inactivity is the greatest risk factor contributing to dementia and anxiety it's as much a factor as genetics. In addition, exercise's anti-inflammatory properties make it the most effective treatment strategy for those who are depressed and don't respond to anti-depressants. The book focuses on overcoming inertia, using exercise to help fight addictions, how we can improve our memory with fitness even as we age, and, importantly, how exercise can help us sleep better, improve focus, and be more creative. Included are easy to use plans for unique aerobic and resistance workouts designed to strengthen the brain.

Different than what I typically see

I was excited to read this guide to improving mental health through exercise. It has a lot of great information on how the brain works, how the chemicals produced by your body affect your mental health, and what types of exercise will give the most benefits. Dr. Heisz incorporates her own research as well as the research of other experts in the field to inform and guide you through the ways that exercise affects your brain function. There are workouts at the end of each chapter to help get you started and to keep you going to achieve positive results for your mental and physical wellbeing. Photos and instructions are included at the end of the book to illustrate the moves listed in each exercise regimen. I found this book full of facts about the human body that I was not previously familiar with. The approach to exercise that Dr. Heisz recommends is different than what I typically see and I’m looking forward to trying her method to get back in shape after taking a break with some foot issues.

Best researched book

If I could I’d give this book 10 stars! It’s well researched and brings positive light on how exercise heals the body. Exercise has such negative connotations to some people that this book is necessary to bring a better relationship with movement for many people.

Interesting and actionable

This book was intriguing and inspiring enough that I set up my own exercise program based on her research to see if it would help boost my mood. I was specifically intrigued by her research around developing our capacity to make new memories when we link aerobic activity with learning something new. The results have been good. It’s too soon to know yet if this will produce long term gains. But I’m pleased with the early results and will go through the book again to glean more of the ideas she puts forth. Recommended. Thanks to NetGalley for providing a copy of this book.
