Choking Hazzard; Limited Range
AAs a big fan or Melissa and Doug toys, I really wanted to love these Disney princess sets. I am a former early childhood educator who bought these sets to use as a reward in my online ESL classroom. In my opinion there are some definite pros and cons of this toy and its counter parts (the Melissa and Doug Belle, Rapunzel, Ariel, and Cinderella magnetic dolls). TLDR: These dolls are sturdy with a great magnet. However, the small pieces are a major choking hazard that preclude them from use in preschool classrooms in my state. Additionally, the fact that only the White princesses are available is very disappointing. Do better Melissa and Doug. Pros: - These magnetic dolls are an excellent representation of their IP. Unlike some Barbie dolls, these look like the Disney princesses. They are easily identifiable. The artwork is also beautiful. - The magnet dolls themselves are quite sturdy. - The magnet doll stands hold the dolls well and are a great touch. I loved that the stands matched the colors of the princess they went with. - The magnet is very strong. It was much stronger than similar toys I have tried. This is a huge plus. - The clothing pieces have interesting details. For example, Snow White's dress has subtle apple detailing. However, it is worth noting that there are several iterations of these dolls. These differences in ‘models’ are not clear in the labeling. For example, I purchased a Belle magnet doll (Melissa and Doug licensed set) from Kohls and though it included the same titling as the set on the Melissa and Doug website, the range of clothing pieces was a little different. It is worth noting, that the current magnet dolls have some clothing items with characters printed on them. For example, Snow White has a dress with a rabbit character painted at the bottom. Though this is probably acceptable for most littles, my autistic kiddo was very frustrated by it. In her pretend play with these dolls she wanted Snow White to be able to wear the dress and meet the rabbit later. She was frustrated the rabbit could not be removed from the dress. - I appreciate the consistency in clothing and accessories across these magnet dolls. Each doll comes with an animal character and a bag! I do wish all of the dolls came with a fan. My student’s absolutely love this accessory in particular and I was disappointed it was left out of the Sleeping Beauty and Snow White set. Cons - This is not suitable for a three year old without extreme supervision. In fact, I am alarmed that this is the start of the age range Melissa and Doug put on the toys. This toy has many small pieces that would be very easily swallowed. In my State, this toy would not be allowed in a state certified preschool classroom (under the age of five) because of the small pieces. The box does have choking hazard that should definitely be heeded. - Though the dolls themselves are very sturdy, I found that the clothing pieces scratched, dented, and chipped pretty easily. After a few hours of using the dolls as a reward for my ESL students, the edges of the design on the clothing pieces were already coming up. - The box for this magnet doll set was my favorite of the lot, but the boxes for the singular magnet doll sets feel like they were made for different toys. The box for the Cinderella magnet doll comes with two compartments empty and the box for the Belle magnet doll has many awkwardly shaped compartments that require the pieces to be sorted in an illogical way. As sorting is one of the suggested ways to play with the dolls listed on the back of the dolls, this stands out. - In my opinion the lack of care paid to designing the boxes is also apparent in the fit of the clothing magnet pieces. Though most of the tops fit the dolls well, each set I purchased had some pieces – particularly skirts and shoes - that didn't fit quite right. For example, some of the skirts are too long for the dolls to wear shoes. Additionally, some of the dresses are too long for the stand to be used comfortably. Similarly, the stand often prevents the shoes from sticking. - I found the availability of some of these magnet sets to be frustrating. Though this one was easy to get my hands on, I purchased what I thought was a current Belle set to receive an older model that had slightly different coloring and different clothing choices. I would have loved to buy the additional outfits separately and even would have paid the same price! It was frustrating to not be sure which iteration of doll I was getting. Additionally, it is my understanding that the Rapunzel doll can only be purchased in a four pack offered around the winter holidays. This makes it difficult to expand the set of dolls. My autistic little one is dying for the Rapunzel doll and it has been nearly impossible for us to find! -My biggest frustration with these magnetic dolls is that only the White Disney princesses seem to be available. At first I thought maybe it was only the ‘classic princesses’ that had been made into Melissa and Doug magnetic dolls but this cannot be the case because Rapunzel can sometimes be purchased. According to Disney the ‘classic princesses’ historically include Pocahontas and Mulan – neither or which seem to be available to purchase. I should have done my homework before I started purchasing the sets – that is on me. Had I realized that this was the case - I would not have purchased any of these magnet sets. As a preschool teacher, as an ESL educator, and as a mom - I am very passionate about inclusivity. I wrongly trusted that Melissa and Doug shared this value. Students - as well as my own kiddo - frequently ask for the other princesses, like Mulan. I would happily buy them if they were available. They are not. Honestly, I cannot articulate how dissapointed I am with this in particular.
