FINALIST FOR THE 2021 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE'S LITERATUREA debut YA novel-in-verse by Amber McBride, Me (Moth) is about a teen girl who is grieving the deaths of her family, and a teen boy who crosses her path. Moth has lost her family in an accident. Though she lives with her aunt, she feels alone and uprooted. Until she meets Sani, a boy who is also searching for his roots. If he knows more about where he comes from, maybe he'll be able to understand his ongoing depression. And if Moth can help him feel grounded, then perhaps she too will discover the history she carries in her bones. Moth and Sani take a road trip that has them chasing ghosts and searching for ancestors. The way each moves forward is surprising, powerful, and unforgettable. Here is an exquisite and uplifting novel about identity, first love, and the ways that our memories and our roots steer us through the universe.

3.5 Star Rating

Me: Moth by Amber McBride is a heartfelt novel written in prose. This is the second lyrically written novel I’ve decided to turn on the audiobook, as it was read by the author, herself. Being able to hear the story spoken by the author as it was intended to be read is a beautiful gift! Me: Moth was a little slow to start, in my opinion. However, I truly felt for Moth. She feels unseen among her peers and feels like she is burdening her aunt with her sadness after the tragic death of her family the summer before. Moth has given up her passion for dance and only begins to feel alive, again, when she connects with Sari. Sari shares his Navajo culture and spirituality while learning about Moth’s ancestry in hoodoo on a beautiful road trip across America. This story of first love, tragedy, and spirituality eventually rips a hole right into your soul with a major twist 75% of the way in. I am rating this novel 3.5 stars out of 5. It is beautifully written and heartbreaking but I wish we knew more about Moth from the very beginning. I wish the twist would have come sooner. I loved the connection, respect, and love between Moth and Sari. Me: Moth has left me excited to read more by Amber McBride
