It's a shame this is a Technic model because as an empty shell it would probably be a more successful result and enjoyable experience. As others have mentioned in their reviews, the transmission is a disaster, seizing up in specific gears. However, I'm not inclined to investigate what might be causing this as the addition of the gearbox adds nothing at all to the model. I'm never going to open the doors to fiddle with the drive and then push it along with rear door or hood open to see if anything's happening. The overall building experience was also disappointing. A Technic gearbox and drivetrain is always going to be enjoyable but the instructions felt like they'd not received much attention, with less clear steps than I'd expect from a more modern kit. The sticker sheet sitting next to you serves as a warning of things to come because once the chassis is complete it's far less rewarding. I wish Lego would have put more effort into the experience here, demonstrating (and potentially fixing) the sequential gearbox before it's entombed in plastic and inaccessible. A worthy addition to my display shelf thanks largely to Land Rover's iconic design.

We’re sorry to hear your building experience with the Land Rover Defender was disappointing. We want our builders to feel inspired and appreciate your feedback to share with our teams.
Great first Technic build
A late review on a retired product but this was my first BIG set with complex engine etc and was a little daunted at first. Completed it over a week and found the whole build just technical enough for me to be really enthralling but not too technical and fiddly. The only thing I didn’t enjoy, and this is more to do with my own ability, is stickers… I struggle to get them straight and center and so prefer printed pieces.

For my dad
Got this for my dad and he told me to build it for himfor christmas. Very nice but the dooors and the hood near the end is a bit repetetive.

Fun project — with caveats.
This was my first Lego Technic, and it was far more challenging than traditional Legos. Took about 23 hours to complete. It has moving gears and parts, but unfortunately, the most important drivetrain/steering system simply does not work. I spent a significant amount of time studying/troubleshooting that system during the build and believe I followed the instructions to the letter. This was disappointing. There were also six missing parts. Fortunately — and amazingly — none of the missing pieces were critical-path items, and I can add them when they arrive from Denmark. This is my fourth project build, and all four had missing pieces (and the other ones WERE critical-path items that halted those projects). Notwithstanding those caveats, this was a fun project.

Favourite Build
Loved this build! I wasn’t sure how i’d like a technic set and now they’re my favourite. The pictures can be a little confusing at times but can be figured out pretty easily and that’s my only negative with this build. Takes lots of time and focus to build correctly but that’s why I loved it! Will definitely be purchasing a lot more technic sets now
