Runs extremely small

I ordered this as a gift for my fiancé who has multiple shirts from this brand. However this one arrives and was extremely small. He always gets a size large with no problem. From the looks of it even an XL would be too small. Not sure if this was a defective item or if this particular style runs extremely small.
