Creative, Delicious, Stunningly Done!
I have never been a fan of traditional pies. The crust has always been too much for me, but I love fillings, and I love pies with other types of crusts. Maya-Camille Broussard may just convert me to a lover of all things pie. In her cookbook, JUSTICE OF THE PIES, she covers everything from sweet to savory, with all types of crusts, with step-by-step instructions for everything from the fillings to the crusts, to toppings. I never expected to find a section of whoopie pie recipes along side her non-traditional flavor combinations: dark chocolate cherry crumble pie (chocolate and cherries, Yummy!) and chocolate + bacon bourbon pecan pie (yes, please!). The savory recipes are a combination of those with traditional crust, biscuits, and mashed potatoes. Tarts, quiches and pot pies, shepherd’s pie, step-by-step instructions for the toppings and sides, and different crust options, as well as the recipes to make ingredients like graham crackers and ginger snaps for their respective crusts. The biscuit recipes will go into constant rotation. Not only does the cookbook include beautifully photographed and diverse recipes, but Broussard has also included stories about people that are inspirational in their work for social justice. Creative and visually stunning, this cookbook belongs on your frequently used shelf. Thanks to the publisher for a gifted copy. All opinions are my own and freely given. #JusticeofthePies #Maya-CamilleBroussard #clarksonpotter #allthingspie

More than just apple pie!
What a refreshing read! I love Maya-Camille Broussard’s writing and her profiles of social justice workers and programs. This is not your typical apple pie cookbook – the flavor combinations are much more innovative! Yes, there’s a recipe for chicken pot pie, but I’ve got my eye on Lemon Chicken + Leek Pot Pie topped with Goat Cheese + Chive Biscuits. Not a pie fan? There’s a whole chapter on Whoopie Pies, a clever way to include cookie sandwiches in a pie book! There’s also lots of biscuit recipes and, if you’re willing to make some pie dough, there are recipes that allow short cuts like using canned peaches or store-bought grape jelly. My only nitpicky quibble is that Broussard doesn’t say what kind of kosher salt she wrote the recipes with – Diamond Crystal or Morton? They really make a difference in recipes. Nonetheless, I can’t wait to start baking these unique sweet and savory goods! I’ve received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

A celebration of pies and flavor!
I first heard about Maya-Camille Broussard last year when I was watching a baking show hosted by Christina Tosi, which I loved, so was excited to see this cookbook. I remember that Maya-Camille was known for the complex delicious flavors that she brings to food, and I see that in this book. The book includes a wonderful intro about Maya-Camille, her father’s influence, and her bakeshop in Chicago. It gave me a deeper appreciation of why she bakes. The unique thing about this book is she kept true to her bakeshop “Justice of the Pies” and highlighted inspirational people throughout the book, along with recipes to accompany those people. So cool! I recommend this book for the stories, but also the great variety of savory and sweet pies, quiches, and tarts, and my favorite is an entire section on just whoopie pies. Eight different Whoopie pies! The rum punch whoopie pies are easy to make and the flavors you get from them are insane! The carrot cake whoopie pies with the cream cheese filling are the perfect bite without having to make an entire carrot cake. I can’t wait to bake more of them, like the lavender, churro, or even the tequila-lime whoopie pies. This book would make a great gift. I’ve received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Social Mission Bakery Shares Best Recipes
Maya-Camille Broussard’s new cookbook “Justice of the Pies” is right on target. Her father, an attorney, was the self-proclaimed “pie master” and she used to watch him bake himself happy in the kitchen on Saturday mornings. When he passed away her cousin suggested starting a foundation to teach children how to bake pie. Her social mission bakery grew out of that and Justice of Pies has been honoring her father and baking up delicious pies, tarts and quiches in Chicago. I was drawn into the book by the introduction where Broussard talks about her mission, based on what her father taught her; everyone deserves an opportunity to reform their lives. Broussard teach classes to children and shows them that healthy food is not difficult to make. I made the Carrot Cake Whoopie Pies and the Buttermilk Cornbread and they were delicious. The recipes were easy to follow and produced results my family loved. The next recipes I’m going to make is the Vegetarian Chili Pot Pie and then the Lemon Espresso Pie. They sound amazing! If you are looking for some new pie/quiche/tart recipes, I recommend this book. I love how Broussard included stories about and recipes from other stewards who live a purpose-driven life. It’s a great read with some good recipes. I’ve received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Inspiring
I've received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review. Two books for the price of one. Great recipes and stories of remarkable people. Some I have heard of and some I hadn't, so you can learn as you bake. So many favorable recipes and non-traditional pies. Though I'm going to try the Pecan Bourbon Pie with the variation of chocolate and bacon. A great cookbook should have a great story.

Beautiful and Inspiring Cookbook!
Maya-Camille Broussard's book is full of delightful and enticing creations! While the focus is on pies, there's also savory pies, quiches, whoopie pies, and tarts. I also love how she's paired the book with stories of activism and social justice as well. Not knowing anything about Maya-Camille before getting this book, I was really impressed and inspired. Some standout recipes to me include bleu cheese praline pear pie, peaches + herb cobbler, Brazilian fish pot pie, cauliflower patties, roasted brussels sprouts and cherry tart, mango and coconut macaroon tart... the list truly could go on! There are over 85 recipes in here that will revive and inspire you in the kitchen. I've received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Great Book, Great Gift
Pies have always scared me to make because I could never master the crust. Not only did Justice of the Pies help me get over my fear but I now have an appreciation for all things pie related; sweet, savory, pie for dinner, pie for dessert and combinations I never knew I needed. I think my favorite of the pies I have made from this book was the Peanut Butter and Jelly Pie. I've received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Expand your notion of pie!
This is an excellent reference for all things pie. The detailed instructions for all the different pie crusts, including her "staple" all butter crust, make it a helpful addition to any cookbook collection. I also had success with her recipe for a gluten-free crust, which did not taste gritty as some do. The book contains not only sweet recipes -- many with unexpected flavor combinations -- but many that can be served for dinner, expanding what you think of as "pie." As a former Windy City inhabitant, I loved her Chicago-inspired Italian Beef Pot Pie, which will make another appearance in my home on a football Sunday. Her butterscotch tart had wide appeal in my family, and her Bacon Pecan Pie is on the menu for Thanksgiving. In addition to the recipes, I also enjoyed reading all the features on social justice heroes, making this more than just a cookbook. Clarkson Potter provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. The opinions shared are my own. This book has year-round appeal.
