THE BESTSELLING, "REMARKABLE" (MARIE CLAIRE) MEMOIR BY THE YOUNGEST RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. "I come from a country that was created at midnight. When I almost died it was just after midday. " When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize. I AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons. I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

Powerful memoir...

Although we have our own issues here in the US, wow, are we blessed to live in a country where women are not subjugated in such a manner that we are unable to express ourselves and have our own dreams. Kudos to Malala's father for being a good man and a forward thinker, and allowing his daughter to realize her self-worth and power. In a country where he is considered the ultimate head of household, it was key that he allowed this precious girl to grow up feeling valuable. What a contribution to society she made, not only locally, but worldwide. This memoir was a testament to good parenting and the strength women can harness when given freedom to spread their wings and fly.

Good Book

I think that “I am Malala” by Christina Lamb and Malala Yousafzai is a good book for people who like books that are non fiction and relating to war or other real life events. I myself enjoy these types of books especially the ones that are set around WWII. This was one of the reasons why I myself choose to read this book. After reading it I can say I enjoyed it. I ended up reading this whole book over a one week duration which is one of the fastest times it’s taken me to read a book. So I was definitely interested in what was happening in this book because if not I don’t think I would have been able to read through this book this quickly which is why I am recommending this book. At the same time I feel like there is a lot of nonsense information in this book that makes things a little confusing. I didn’t like how it was trying to explain things about the Pakistani government and leaders. There were just so many different people which made it confusing. I do understand some of this background information was important because of the context needed to understand the events in the book but it talked a lot about things that were just boring to me. Malala also goes in depth explaining the past life of her dad. I didn’t really understand why that was in the book, maybe it was there to tell more about her father because he plays a big part in her life, supporting her in everything she does. Maybe all this cultural information was redundant to me as I am an Indian. A lot of the cultural things were very similar to what life in India is like so I was able to relate to Malala in many ways. So we had this connection a normal western person might not have. For example how Malala’s mom would keep her head covered. This is the same with my mom when she’s around elders. She covers her head as a way to show respect. When we were in India for the summer in 2019 and one of my grandparents were visiting she would make sure to have her head was covered. It wasn’t really that big of a deal like she wouldn’t be in trouble if she didn’t cover her head especially now days but it was just to show respect. I think that might be why I thought some of the things in this book were just redundant and boring to me.

Pros and Cons

4/5 stars- This book is very well written and has many strong nessicary details that really put together the whole story. This book is very entertaining, and you can’t even put it down once you’ve read 2 pages! Malala really know how to put together a story. Some of the review say that she had too many details, but I think all of the details she included are necessary! I respectfully disagree with the people that said she included too much background information about her and her father, but she needed that and she was explain how her father is the reason she made it this far. He is the reason she kept pushing and why she never gave. So, all that is very much necessary. This book isn’t too hard to read so I recommend being in at least 6th grade to read this book. PROS- - It’s a pretty easy read for matured 6th grade from and up which is a very wide range considering how hard it is to write a book like that. - Its very informing on the history of Pakistanis. She represented her culture and stood up for her rights. -Not only does she stand up for the Pakistani religion, but she is also supporting females, She has a strong voice in feminism which can educates looks of young girls and boys. -She includes her backstory and why she wanted to use her voice and she thoroughly explained her relationships. CONS- -Its quite a bit of an overload with the details some topics I think mean a lot to her and she overloads with necessary details which is not good. -Her pace is a bit slow when she cannot get off of a topic -She has a bit of trouble moving to topics some of them are out of place To summarize, I liked this book and there are only minor things a dislike and as you can see, the pros definitely overpower, and I would recommend this book to many people. This book has also helped me gain confidence and showed me how rotten some people can be and why its important to put yourself out there and say no to wrong and yes to rights.

Amazing Book, A MUST READ

Malala Yousafzai is a courageous, inspiring woman who everyone needs to hear her story. This book was honestly breathtaking in the fact that it managed to tell a great story, teach the rich and deep culture of Pakistan, and educate on history prior to these events and during. The pictures that are embedded in this book. This story is about Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, a girl who was born in Pakistan during the time that the Taliban and terrorism were coming to the area. The fact that Malala fought for her rights even when the Taliban put certain restrictions in her area the Swat Valley. I am Malala is most certainly one of the best books that I have ever read. It had it all and it was so wonderfully executed. This book really impacted me because it really opened my eyes to a different part of the world and the culture. The rules that the Taliban had placed on Women’s rights are awful, one of the main ones Malala had such a problem with wad the fact that girls were not allowed to receive an education. Malala, one of the smartest girls in her grade, had a huge problem with this and she decided to continue attending school. Because of her speaking out Malala ended up getting shot. Ultimately all of this did not stop Malala from continuing to fight and challenge gender roles. This book really put the issue of women’s rights in perspective because in America we know that Women and Men aren’t equal and there are things such as the wage gap but putting that in perspective with women’s rights around the world especially in Pakistan, it makes you more appreciative of simpler things such as the right to an education or being able to drive. Overall I believe Malala Yousafzai did a great job with telling her story in this book. The way that she blended all aspects of the story into this without making it boring and putting the history and culture in a simple way so many people could understand and relate. Including her family into the story was also really essential to this book because it helped you understand the people around her who shaped her beliefs and personality. This book is incredible and I would definitely recommend it, it has something for everyone to enjoy, learn and laugh about.
