Satirical, dry humor

This was my son's textbook for a Japanese lit class at Cal. He gave it to me because I love cats and he knew I'd appreciate it. The author is famous and among the classics, and rightly so. It's a satire on the mores of Japanese middle class society of 1905 told through the voice of an English teacher's cat. It's hilarious - sometimes I laughed so hard I cried. It's quite long, over 600 pages, but I didn't want it to end, anyway.
