#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An intimate and revealing portrait of civil rights icon and longtime U.S. congressman John Lewis, linking his life to the painful quest for justice in America from the 1950s to the presentfrom the Pulitzer Prizewinning author of The Soul of America NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND COSMOPOLITAN John Lewis, who at age twenty-five marched in Selma, Alabama, and was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, was a visionary and a man of faith. Drawing on decades of wide-ranging interviews with Lewis, Jon Meacham writes of how this great-grandson of a slave and son of an Alabama tenant farmer was inspired by the Bible and his teachers in nonviolence, Reverend James Lawson and Martin Luther King, Jr., to put his life on the line in the service of what Abraham Lincoln called the better angels of our nature. From an early age, Lewis learned that nonviolence was not only a tactic but a philosophy, a biblical imperative, and a transforming reality. At the age of four, Lewis, ambitious to become a minister, practiced by preaching to his family's chickens. When his mother cooked one of the chickens, the boy refused to eat ithis first act, he wryly recalled, of nonviolent protest.

An Intimate Portrait of a Great Man

It’s a humbling experience to comment on the glorious words of award-winning writer Jon Meacham, and even more so to expound on the giant of a man that was John Lewis. Meacham calls him a “saint in our time” with great reverence, and aptly so. We know John Lewis as the sharecropper’s son who became a disciple of Martin Luther King and risked life and limb to fight - always a non-violent fight - for civil and human rights. As a respected congressman from Georgia for 33 years, his death in 2020 left a hole in the conscience and consciousness of politics, and in our hearts. What always struck me most about Lewis when I heard his unique yet majestic speech pattern, and saw his face bearing the pain, courage, and majesty of his life experiences, was the dignity of the man, the forbearance, the hope and gentleness that was intimately his. Lewis was a man who transcended the mundane world of politics into legend, a mythological hero we should all aspire to be. He wove the depth of his Christian faith into action with the motto “Get into Trouble, good trouble, necessary trouble.” Meacham’s book should be required reading for all students of history and civics so they will know all those who fought and sacrificed for the freedoms they enjoy and should never be taken for granted. The book is rich in language, poignancy, and remarkable photos of notable persons and moments in history that amplify the importance of Lewis’ life story. It deserves a place on the bookshelf of every lover of democracy and freedom for all.

Research Project

This was an amazing book to read when wanting to learn about the background of John Lewis, the historical events going on around his life, and the sufferings he and many others had to face. John Lewis is no doubt a significant leader in the civil rights movement, and Meacham does a remarkable job describing such greatness. John Lewis is described as a savior in this biography. The book focuses on the events during the 1960s, like marches and brutalities, while also covering John Lewis’ life and journey into becoming the historical politician we know him as today. I bought this book not only to learn about John Lewis and what he did, but to deepen my knowledge on the civil rights movement and it’s background. So glad Meacham wrote about the marches and personal connections Lewis had that I had no idea about prior!
