Since its original publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind—winner of the Pulitzer Prize and one of the bestselling novels of all time—has been heralded by readers everywhere as The Great American Novel. Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read. Widely considered The Great American Novel, and often remembered for its epic film version, Gone With the Wind explores the depth of human passions with an intensity as bold as its setting in the red hills of Georgia. A superb piece of storytelling, it vividly depicts the drama of the Civil War and Reconstruction. This is the tale of Scarlett O’Hara, the spoiled, manipulative daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, who arrives at young womanhood just in time to see the Civil War forever change her way of life. A sweeping story of tangled passion and courage, in the pages of Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell brings to life the unforgettable characters that have captured readers for over seventy years.

It’s about the Romance!

This novel is primarily a romance and character study. Essentially, it’s about Scarlet O’Hara and the two men in her life—the man who pursues her (Rhett Butler), and the man she pursues (Ashley Wilkes). Everything else is secondary. Scarlet is a spoiled, selfish woman determined to survive and get what she wants out of life. Margaret Mitchell does a superb job of describing and creating the main characters in her novel from the first page. You feel they are all real people with unique personalities. Mammy is another excellent character; even Rhett Butler says he wants to earn her respect. I saw the movie “Gone With The Wind” as an 11year-old girl and then read the novel a few months later. The romance and love triangle were fascinating to me, and the novel was even better than the film. You become so engrossed in the story that it’s hard to put down the book. It’s certainly not Shakespeare, and might not be everyone’s “cup of tea,” but there’s no doubt that it’s an interesting escapist romance.

GWTW

One of my favorite reads! A hardback copy, purchased many years ago, fell apart and I am going to read it again.

This is not a history book

A long argument to romanticize the pre-civil south and why we should pity the southerners.
