I bought Girls of Paper and Fire and Girls of Storm and Shadow at the beginning of the year and once I started, I couldn’t put them down. I read them so slow because I didn’t want them to end. Can’t wait for book 3!

Stunning, Tense, Heartbreaking Tale
(Crossposted on Goodreads) Lei, a Paper caste seventeen-year-old, is forcibly taken from her village to be one of the Demon King's Paper Girls or concubines, but while she struggles to stay alive and protect her family, she falls in love with a fellow Paper Girl. I loved how Ngan connects Lei to past generations not only of Paper Girls but other Paper castes in general, reflecting on this shared history and the intergenerational trauma of war and oppression. The world-building was so interesting, I loved learning about the different Demon types, clans' flags, the land's various regions, the festivals. Ngan's descriptions are beautiful, the jacket copy uses the word lush to describe the writing about 4+ times and I can't be mad because they're right! I especially loved the descriptions of clothing, being able to really visualize the East and Southeast Asian influences. While the novel begins with immediate action and Lei is forced to become a Paper Girl quite early on, I did wish the tangible end goals and stakes (which do exist!!) are introduced earlier, to create a stronger deadline. HOWEVER, personally I was so terrified of the Demon King and anxious about Lei and Wren's relationship being discovered that even when there wasn't physical conflict, I felt that Ngan still maintained and amped up the anxiety and tension. I suspect this will take on a much more prominent role in the later books, but I would have liked a little more information and expansion on the Sickness and increasing rebel insurrections.
