"Tug-at-your-Heartstrings" Friendship Story
Forever friends are hard to find. The only thing harder is leaving your forever friends behind and that's exactly what Dandan and Yueyue face when Dandan tells Yueyue her family is moving to the United States. Together the girls experience their last Lunar New Year together doing all the traditional things they've done together in the past including making frozen paper cut snowflake ornaments. When Yueyue declares "friends are friends forever" and gives Dandan the paper to make ornaments with her new friends in the U.S., I have to admit my heart melted. Unfortunately the road to making a new forever friend is tough for Dandan until she meets Christina. Christina helps acclimate Dandan to American traditions and Dandan shares with Christina Chinese traditions including making the snowflake ornaments. I highly recommend this "tug-at-your-heartstrings" story of friendship by written by Dane Liu and illustrated by Lynn Scurfield.

A beautiful story about the power of friendships
A beautiful story about the power of friendships. Dandan and Yueyue are the best of friends, but Dandan is moving to the US. The girls make the most of their last Lunar New Year together, celebrating with food (deliciously described) and their tradition of making frozen red paper cut ornaments. As a goodbye gift to remind Dandan that “Friends are friends, forever,” Yueyue gives her the materials to make the ornaments with a new friend. After the move, things are tough for Dandan, she doesn’t know the language and the kids won’t let her play with them. Eventually, she makes a new friend, and Christina helps her with words and American traditions. Then Dandan shares her Lunar New Year traditions with Christina, and the words and art on the last spread made me teary-eyed. Dane Liu’s lush language bring the scenes to vivid life, which are even more affecting knowing the story is based on her childhood. Lynn Scurfield’s sweet illustrations pop with color and bring even more emotion to each scene.

A gorgeous book with a beautiful message
Dandan has been best friends with Yueyue for as long as she can remember. And all that is about to change when Dandan and her family move to the United States--leaving her best friend, all that is familiar, and all that represents home. The move is hard but is made easier once she finally makes friends with a classmate, Christina. And just as Yueyue and Dandan were forever friends so become Dandan and Christina. This gorgeous book will help children who are moving to new homes and adjusting to similar challenges. Highly recommended.

Beautiful and full of heart!
This is a touching story based on the author's own experience of immigrating from China to the United States. In the book, a young girl named Dandan moves to America and must leave her best friend behind. Dandan must navigate a new culture and struggles to learn English. She feels very alone until meeting a new friend, Christina, and their friendship blossoms. The illustrations are lovely, and the end of the book includes information on Chinese traditions, including paper cutting. This book has a huge amount of heart and would be great to share with someone who is facing a potentially difficult transition.
