From international bestselling sensation Thomas Olde Heuvelt comes Echo, a thrilling descent into madness and obsession as one man confronts nature-and something even more ancient and evil answers back. "A compulsive page-turner mixing supernatural survival horror and adventure." -Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts and The Pallbearers' Club Nature is calling-but they shouldn't have answered. Travel journalist and mountaineer Nick Grevers awakes from a coma to find that his climbing buddy, Augustin, is missing and presumed dead. Nick's own injuries are as extensive as they are horrifying. His face wrapped in bandages and unable to speak, Nick claims amnesia-but he remembers everything. He remembers how he and Augustin were mysteriously drawn to the Maudit, a remote and scarcely documented peak in the Swiss Alps. He remembers how the slopes of Maudit were eerily quiet, and how, when they entered its valley, they got the ominous sense that they were not alone. He remembers: something was waiting for them. . . But it isn't just the memory of the accident that haunts Nick. Something has awakened inside of him, something that endangers the lives of everyone around him…It's one thing to lose your life. It's another to lose your soul.

Echo

My thanks to Macmillan/Tor Forge, T.O.H.,.and Netgalley. In all honesty, I'm at a loss on reviewing this book! I liked it, then didn't like it at all. Then I loved it. Hated it. Loved and hated. To infinity and beyond! Thing is that this book was too long. It meandered. I thought of quitting this story a few times. Actually, that's a vast understatement! I couldn't go 20 pages without me saying "Lisa, why?" By the time I realized that it wasn't going to be a fairytale ending, I was in too deep. Did I love this book? No. It's a difficult story to like. Would I read more from this author? Again, no. Until he or his publisher's can cut out the filler, then I've no interest in reading anything of Mr. Heuvelts again. Shame that, as I just bought his book Hex last week! Still, I stuck around until the end. It was at times maddening..But I actually liked this tale. "Mostly!"

Creepy Atmospheric Horror

I read this author’s other book Hex and I liked it. This was was just as enjoyable for me. At certain points I was on the edge of my seat! It was creepy, atmospheric, thrilling! Nick Grevers, a mountaineer and travel journalist wakes from a coma to learn his best friend Augustin is missing and presumed dead. Nick suffered serious injuries himself and claims to suffer from amnesia. However, he remembers everything. Nick and his friend went on an epic expedition to Maudit a lesser known peak in the Swiss Alps. The trip starts of fine until they enter the valley. They begin to feel like something is watching them. Stalking them. Nick was lucky he made it back from that trip alive. However, there is a change within himself that puts everyone he loves in terrible danger. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc.

Creepy Supernatural Horror Thriller

I’m not usually a fan of the horror genre, but Echo won me over. Its superb writing, engaging plot and well developed characters make for a first-rate read. It’s a supernatural fantasy, psychological thriller and love story all rolled into one sinister tale that will give you goosebumps right from the very beginning with its terror filled prologue. The vivid descriptions of mountain climbing and the Alps might make you want to read this book while snuggled up on your sofa wrapped in your coziest blanket. 4.5 stars

Creepy Horror Book

This book had a The Shining feel to it, especially towards the end. It was a bit disorienting in the beginning as it skipped from Sam to Nick. I liked experiencing the different points-of-view and the author did a fantastic job of changing the tone and style of each character. It added to the character development! I’m still trying to wrap my head around the ending! A solid horror read! Thank you NetGalley and Tor Nightfire for and advanced copy!

Hex fans need to read this one!

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge, Tor Nightfire for an advanced eBook copy in exchange for an honest review. Having read Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt I was super excited to get scared once again ! This book fit the bill, it's terrifying from the start. Don't plan on reading home alone or during a winter storm for sure. The book starts with Julie alone in a cabin in the Swiss Alps, waiting on her brother to arrive. When she sees someone in the hallway, GAH!!!! I couldn't put it down... surrounded by looming mountains and rushing winds and snow this one is a nail biter for sure. The story is based around Nick our handsome mountain climber who loves the rush of adrenaline he gets from going higher and higher. His husband, Sam is constantly worried about him falling and dying on the side of a mountain while he waits at home for his return. Until the time he gets that dreaded call, Nick is in the hospital and his climbing partner Augustin didn't return. Slowly the story unravels as we hear the harrowing story of how Nick survives the dreaded Maudit mountain. Piece by piece Heuvelt feeds us bird seeds of information... (yes, fear the birds!) . Hang on until the end to see who survives and what really happened on that mountain. A definite for fans of Horror and Outdoor adventure! Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge, Tor Nightfire for an advanced eBook copy in exchange for an honest review.

Just not for me

"They say the dead want to embrace you. That they want to warm themselves with your life. Because they’re so cold. So very cold." Nick and Augustine go climbing, and only Nick comes back, sporting horrible injuries and claiming that he has no idea what happened. Something on that mountain was calling to them, and is still calling to Nick after he leaves the hospital and reunites with his boyfriend Sam. I really wanted to like this book, but in the end I felt really disappointed. I think the writing style threw me off. There's a lot of very interesting stuff in this book, but I think the way it's written makes it difficult to follow. Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge for giving me an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Imagine if Chuck Palahniuk wrote a horror story

Imagine if Chuck Palahniuk wrote a gothic horror story about a handsome, athletic alpinist who was recently disfigured on an expedition and his affluent, superficial boyfriend. The prologue was so creepy, it gave me goosebumps but it’s all downhill from there. You get it. Downhill, it’s a skiing reference.

If House of Leave was a Mountain...

If House of Leaves was a Mountain... That is the though that kept echoing through my mind as I read this cold, no glacially-freezing, slow burn of supernatural and psychological horror. At 416 pages, Echo should have been a quick read for me, but Thomas Olde Heuvelt wove his story in such a way that I lost track of time and my page count seemed stagnant despite reading on. The disorienting atmosphere was absolutely stifling, and I could sense the dizziness and breathlessness creep in beneath my covers as the snow was falling, falling, falling outside my windows. The sense of doom, even my own doom, seemed inevitable. This is a perfect read for a snow-bound weekend and those who feel the written word instead of just read them. Thank you NetGalley and Tor/Nightfire for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
