The author of the widely praised Wordslut analyzes the social science of cult influence- how cultish groups from Jonestown and Scientology to SoulCycle and social media gurus use language as the ultimate form of power. What makes "cults" so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we're looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join—and more importantly, stay in—extreme groups. We secretly want to know- could it happen to me? Amanda Montell's argument is that, on some level, it already has . . . Our culture tends to provide pretty flimsy answers to questions of cult influence, mostly having to do with vague talk of "brainwashing. " But the true answer has nothing to do with freaky mind-control wizardry or Kool-Aid. In Cultish, Montell argues that the key to manufacturing intense ideology, community, and us/them attitudes all comes down to language. In both positive ways and shadowy ones, cultish language is something we hear—and are influenced by—every single day. Through juicy storytelling and cutting original research, Montell exposes the verbal elements that make a wide spectrum of communities "cultish," revealing how they affect followers of groups as notorious.

How Language Shapes Our Loyalty

Cultish by Amanda Montell is a fascinating look at how language shapes our beliefs, loyalty, and even our sense of identity. The word cult might bring to mind extreme cases like Manson or Jonestown, but Montell reveals that the same linguistic techniques used in dangerous sects are also at play in everyday life—through fitness programs, marketing campaigns, political movements, and influencer culture. She breaks down how words and phrases are carefully designed to build devotion, foster belonging, and sometimes, shut down critical thinking. Whether it’s a wellness guru promising transformation or a politician rallying unwavering support, language is the tool that makes people commit—sometimes blindly. This book is an eye-opener, helping readers recognize the subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways words influence decisions. It’s not just about spotting manipulation—it’s about reclaiming our ability to think freely. A must-read for anyone curious about the power of language in modern life.

Problematic methodology with interesting history

Interesting history but the author uses the flawed and unscientific method of performativity as a means of critique this is tantamount to claiming spells are real. It's no wonder the she side steps objectivity ignoring the problematic metaphysical claims of both religions and cults. Her inability to confront the issues of false claims in favor of such a subjective view is exactly the way cult leaders and grifters get their foot in the door.

Fascinating

I would say this book was largely super interesting. Except for the fitness section, I know what the author was getting at, I just don’t really enjoy working out and never have so that part didn’t hit as good for me personally. The other thing is I felt I was being driven slowly to madness by constantly reading "more on that in Part X". It was fine at first but then it got to be too much. I know we’re gonna get there babe, tell me about Part 1 now and we’ll worry about Part 3 in Part 3, gosh! Sorry to complain, I really did enjoy it! I’m interested in more from this author for sure

Cultish

Think of Hitler and other charismatic speakers and the power of their language to control the masses. What a terrible thought! Amanda Montell explores the theory of language as a powerful tool in the hands of a wrong individual. A chilling idea that people are so easily led astray. But this utter devotion has happened endless times in the history of the world. An interesting and frightening book. A little too pedantic at times.

Engaging Look at the Language of Cults

This is a breezy pop psychology look at cults and cult-like enterprises, basing its analysis on the language used to entice and retain group members. Montell has an engaging style of writing, and the details of her various targets are fascinating, as well as somewhat perplexing.

Mildly interesting

The author describes how she came to see the language of fanatacism as a common feature in toxic new religions, multi-level marketing schemes, fitness clubs, and cosmetics fads. She doesn't quite describe this language or how to recognize it. She finds it performative in some sense, maybe just in that it produces outcomes. Her description of her experience with a well-known science fiction religion is wonderful.

Very validating

When I was much younger I got involved in a Christian-ish cult. Ms. Montell described my experiences, my thoughts and feelings, and my internal chaos to a "T." The book helped me realize that I was not crazy back then, just lost, battered by life and looking for answers and stability.

Fascinating and important

A fascinating look at how “cultish” language influences both super dangerous groups and everyday ones. In a phrase, this book is about the power of words. Loaded with history, psychology, interviews with former cult followers, and even some entertaining personal stories, the book takes us on a ride from history's most notorious cults (Jonestown, Heaven's Gate, Scientology) to “cultish” groups of today (MLMs, SoulCycle, social media influencers) and how they use language to attract people and get them to stop thinking for themselves. This book is both wildly entertaining to read and important to our modern culture. I’ve been recommending it to everyone.
