From debut author Nina Varela comes the first book in a richly imagined epic fantasy duology about an impossible love between two girls - one human, one Made - whose romance could be the beginning of a revolution. Perfect for fans of Marie Rutkoski's The Winner's Curse as well as Game of Thrones and Westworld. After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, designed to be the playthings of royals, usurped their owners' estates and bent the human race to their will. Now Ayla, a human servant rising in the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging her family's death… by killing the sovereign's daughter, Lady Crier. Crier was Made to be beautiful, flawless, and to carry on her father's legacy. But that was before her betrothal to the enigmatic Scyre Kinok, before she discovered her father isn't the benevolent king she once admired, and most importantly, before she met Ayla. Now, with growing human unrest across the land, pressures from a foreign queen, and an evil new leader on the rise, Crier and Ayla find there may be only one path to love: war.

Entertaining book

I want to give this book a 4.5 because it really was very interesting and had me hooked after a few pages. I will say the reason why this book isn’t a 5 is because it was a little slow slow at first, it was very predictable, and some of the things that was happening in the book was dragged out until towards the end. I don't mind a book being predictable to an extent, and it almost crossed the threshold of being too predictable. Other than these few things I thought it was a really good book.

Obsessed

By far, my favorite book I've read. The characters are well formed and the world is well thought out.

One of my favorites!!

I got this book for my birthday and I absolutely loved the first and second book. I’m not one to write reviews, but this one deserved it. I loved the way things were described in the book and the way queer relationships seemed normalized in the book. (I know it’s a wlw book, but still). If you’re second guessing please don’t! You won’t regret getting this book.

Action, intrigue and Romance

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Lots of suspense and romantic tension and intrigue. I audibly gasped a few times while reading. Definitely have to buy the sequel now!

Fantastic! Amazing!

This book is by far one of the best works of wlw literature I have ever read, which while it is a sparse category I can still say the former statement with confidence. Crier's War has one of the best "settings" I've read in any book and by this I mean that the world building is incredible. Sometimes when creating a fantasy world authors can go a little bit overboard and confuse the readers. This is something that Nina Varela did not do. I understood the laws and restraints of the world entirely and while it may not be the most unique world it is an entirely original idea. I personally love the idea of the automae and that they don't run of batteries or electricity but from something as simple bit as intriguing as a type of mineral. It really takes the idea of "robots" to another realm. And we can't leave out the best part, that both of the main characters are wlw. Even better, this is a slow-burn, enemies to lovers wlw. The two main characters, Crier and Ayla, are like a gay Romeo and Juliet. Tragic lovers who cannot be together, except if Juliet was a fiery human who actually hated Romeo for being a Montague and Romeo was a charmingly naive robot girl who's only two reactions to every situation were "gay panic" and "gay fear." So maybe they are nothing like Romeo and Juliet at all but one things for sure, I would have liked much more to read this is sophomore English than Shakespeare"s actual play.
