Have you longed to have an indoor garden of houseplants but thought it too difficult an enterprise? Let me introduce you to Winner of the Judges Choice Gold Medal in the 2021 Royal Horticultural Show Jade Murray’s latest book - Beginners Houseplant Garden. She nurtures her creative flair with an indoor garden. This is a beautifully illustrated book where she takes a deep dive into houseplants. Starting with why we need houseplants to their care and a lot in between. Murray dedicates her book to her 3 children – nothing new. However, when an author sees her children as various plants I recognise she is passionate about her subject. That excites me. Advising on which plants to choose, starting small with not more than 3 plants, she deals with everything from the pot size one chooses, the growing conditions needed, the different diseases that could afflict the plants, the whole caboodle. From the humble Coleus to the more exotic plants. Most of us are guilty of falling in love with a plant and buying it on impulse without considering numerous issues regarding the plant itself including does one have an environment or the space suitable for it. And what about the tools one needs? I had no idea that there were some plants that are easier to grow than others. I also could not help noticing that all the plants had a high humidity level. Murray also discusses propagation. Um…...a great way to increase one’s own stock and also generate gifts, maybe. One learns about terrariums and air plants - I was fascinated with both of them. Hey, there are Diva plants too, and yeah like the name suggests they are a stroppy bunch. Lol Those of us who would like to share our adventure on social media will find the section on photography helpful. Yup, loved this book and found it inspirational. Guess when one can’t have an outdoor garden or it’s a tiny one Murrays book would be quite useful. But honestly anyone would find this book useful as a houseplant garden is a doable and has many benefits as she will tell you. This gorgeous book is a keeper both as a reference and its content. It would also be a wonderful gift to encourage a newbie gardener or a family hobby.
