The bestselling citizen's guide to economics Basic Economics is a citizen's guide to economics, written for those who want to understand how the economy works but have no interest in jargon or equations. Bestselling economist Thomas Sowell explains the general principles underlying different economic systems- capitalist, socialist, feudal, and so on. In readable language, he shows how to critique economic policies in terms of the incentives they create, rather than the goals they proclaim. With clear explanations of the entire field, from rent control and the rise and fall of businesses to the international balance of payments, this is the first book for anyone who wishes to understand how the economy functions. This fifth edition includes a new chapter explaining the reasons for large differences of wealth and income between nations. Drawing on lively examples from around the world and from centuries of history, Sowell explains basic economic principles for the general public in plain English.

Will Change Your Life

Don't be fooled by the title - yes, this book is about basic economics. But as you come to understand those basics, you will gain real insight into so much more about how the world around you works - from minimum wage, to rent control, to labor in third world countries, to pay disparity, to how statistics almost always lack the context needed to draw appropriate inferences, and more. Sowell’s writing is clean and straightforward, and will hook you from the very first chapter. The book examines many common ideas that "sound good" in light of the real outcomes of those ideas, using actual examples from across the globe and throughout time. By understanding how things ACTUALLY work and why, you will be a better citizen, equipped to good in the world – not just think you are. Despite how relevant these principles are to the lives and livelihoods of everyone, after you read this book, you may understand why there is no push from the powers-at-be to make this a requirement (or even an option) in high school. One of the most important books you will ever read.
