The story follows Corporal Loyette and his unit, who are nearing the end of his tour in Afghanistan. Their days are boring and their work menial. So when they’re told a ghost story about an old barracks just off base, they don’t take much convincing to go explore it. Obviously, this is a bad idea. This is a horror novel. We all know better by now. This wasn’t an easy read. The imagery used has staying power. This book is unsettling and disturbing. The first half is slow-paced, which matches the monotony of the day to day life of the soldiers. It was maybe a little too slow despite the fact that it was making a point. I urge the reader to hang in there. It’s worth it. The second half of the book picks up and takes the dread that the first half has spent time building. This leads to a fantastic ending. I was surprised to learn that this is a debut novel for the author. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Milas. Meanwhile, I’ll have a lot of trouble shaking some of the imagery the author has kindly left in my brain. Much appreciated! I recommend this book to any horror lover. Go in knowing that it’s a slow burn but it’s a really good one. Hang in there! I promise it’s worth it.
