Longlisted for The Center for Fiction's First Novel Prize An extraordinary novel about the quiet and not-so-quiet horrors of war. It 2010, and the recently promoted Corporal Loyette and his unit are finishing up their deployment at a new base in Kajaki, Afghanistan. Their duties here are straightforward loading and unloading cargo into and out of helicopters and their days are a mix of boredom and dread. The Brits they're replacing delight in telling them the history of the old barracks just off base, a Soviet-era militia house they claim is haunted, and Loyette and his men don t need much convincing to make a clandestine trip outside the wire to explore it. It a short, middle-of-the-day adventure, but the men experience a mounting agitation after their visit to the militia house. In the days that follow they try to forget about the strange, unsettling sights and sounds from the house, but things are increasingly not right. Loyette becomes determined to ignore his and his marines growing unease, convinced that it just the strain of war playing tricks on them. But something about the militia house will not let them go. Meticulously plotted and viscerally immediate in its telling, The Militia.

Great Slow Burn

Thank you to NetGalley and Henry Holt and Co. as well as the author for this ARC. #NetGalley #HenryHoltandCo. #JohnMilas #TheMilitiaHouse #Horror #Fiction #HorrorDebutNovel #Military #Book #BookReview w Title: The Militia House Author: John Milas Format: eBook Publisher: Henry Holt and Co, Publication Date: July 11, 2023 Themes: Military, haunted house, paranoia, paranormal Trigger Warnings: military experience, war, PTSD, paranormal This is a great slow burn. The story follows Corporal Loyette and his unit, who are nearing the end of his tour in Afghanistan. Their days are boring and their work menial. So when they’re told a ghost story about an old barracks just off base, they don’t take much convincing to go explore it. Obviously, this is a bad idea. This is a horror novel. We all know better by now. This wasn’t an easy read. The imagery used has staying power. This book is unsettling and disturbing. The first half is slow-paced, which matches the monotony of the day to day life of the soldiers. It was maybe a little too slow despite the fact that it was making a point. I urge the reader to hang in there. It’s worth it. The second half of the book picks up and takes the dread that the first half has spent time building. This leads to a fantastic ending. I was surprised to learn that this is a debut novel for the author. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Milas. Meanwhile, I’ll have a lot of trouble shaking some of the imagery the author has kindly left in my brain. Much appreciated! I recommend this book to any horror lover. Go in knowing that it’s a slow burn but it’s a really good one. Hang in there! I promise it’s worth it.
