The Instant New York Times Bestseller The book is a beautiful trip. (New York Times Magazine) Soulful . . . Feels like hanging out within a history of American movies over the last 50 years. (Los Angeles Times) Startlingly cinematic. A fine memoir. (The Guardian) From one of the most iconic actors in the history of film, an astonishingly revelatory account of a creative life in full to the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force. But Pacino was in his mid-thirties by then and had already lived several lives. A fixture of avant-garde theater in New York, he had led a bohemian existence, working odd jobs to support his craft. He was raised by a fiercely loving but mentally unwell mother and her parents after his father left them when he was young, but in a real sense he was raised by the streets of the South Bronx, and…

A TOUGH GUY'S SOFT SIDE

Quick, enjoyable read following Al Pacino's early humble upbringing in the Bronx to the pinnacle of Hollywood stardom. After a lifetime of acting, he seems to have come to terms with growing old. Yet, while finding happiness with his family life and his many memories as one of the most respected actors of our time, he seems to wander a bit in age, searching for a clue as to play this new role of an elderly man. Probably the most difficult role of his life. I think his thought process and dream can best be summarized in his answer in an Actor's Studio interview with James Lipton. When Lipton ask: "What do you think God will say at the pearly gates?" Pacino replied "I hope He says rehearsal starts tomorrow at three P.M."

Absolutely intriguing and Heartbreaking.

I absolutely loved how this book talked through a perspective as if Al was sitting down and having a cup of coffee with you while he talks about his life. There's a great sense of humor as well as some serious themes and we get a good perspective on how Al copes with heartbreak and how that effects his life. I appreciate his overall honesty throughout the novel and I couldn't put the book down. His analysis and perceptive on death and memories was absolutely heartbreaking to read and I shed a couple tears with how touching his conveyed his words to be. Overall this is a great book and I 100% recommend it.

Get ready for a Wild Ride!

I'm more than halfway through this book and I can't recommend it highly enough. I read the excerpt in the New Yorker magazine recently and was hooked! I never read books by actors or film celebrities. And I'm not really interested in the theatre or Hollywood. So, how did I get hooked? Pacino is an incredible writer. He can really tell a story. His rough childhood in the South Bronx, his attraction to acting, learning the craft and his breaking into the New York theatre scene and movies make quite a story. To be honest, it feels like riding a runaway train, hurtling down the tracks as you hang on for dear life! Pacino has kind words for everyone he worked with and especially for the people who helped him along the way. This is a man who is introspective, who has a sense of humor, tinged with self-deprication. Really, I think this a story by and about a man who is consumed by the desire to act. But the character had to fit and the script had to be right. Read it and enjoy! It's a very special book! Thanks, Al!

An honest look inside the man

Not just a memoir of his life and accomplishments but an honest look inside the man, his motivations, his ambitions and his flaws. The conversational tone of this book made it a quick, enjoyable read. The book is filled with anecdotes and memories that cover most of his films and stage plays as well as his personal life. Highly recommended
