All Fours by Miranda July

Miranda July is a good writer and the book is funny, however, that doesn't carry the book. I gave it three stars on readability and humor. None of the characters are really likable and the only sympathetic ones were the child and the dog, both of whom I felt really bad for. Generally it is a journey through an incredibly narcissistic mind of a woman who obsesses, disregards, and discards people. Character development is shallow with the husband being a background figure and her best friend came across as if she was a plot device to break up the internal monologue of the narrator. I disliked the way she treated menopause - as an excuse for behavior and also as the end of her life with no use, no sex, and no future after. I did not find it a particular sexual revelation. I thought Prince was daring when he wrote songs in the 80s - this was not a revelation to me, unless maybe you have a repressed sexual life. She wanted to be raw and sexual but it just came across as self-absorbed. This is also not an exploration of polyamory or how to make a polyamorous relationship work. I did hear that it will be picked up as a television series and I think that it will be a very funny show.

I'd give it a zero if I could
This is the first book I couldn't finish. I don't understand the praise from others, I thought it was awful! Returned to the store.

Moments of brilliant wit...
...but this was a short story, not a book.

Waste of time and money
I was looking forward to July's book, but I was bitterly disappointed. I disliked the fact that her son was referred to a "they," which was confusing to me. Her character, and the things she does, imo, are way too "out there" (for me). After reading it, I am still wondering what the point of the book is other than a woman in mid-life. It is a fantasy of the author's or her reality. Either way, this book is not for everyone, and it certainly was not for me. I felt it was a waste of my time and money. I will look into future books a bit better next time.

Who Are We Really?
After experiencing a reading slump I picked up Miranda July's All Fours and it did not disappoint. I think it takes courage to write a novel like this, to be so honest and daring about sexuality and what it means to be a a woman in mid-life. Well written and funny, I recommend to anyone who enjoys taking risks in order to truly understand yourself.

Probably the worst book I’ve read.
I don’t understand why all the hype over this book. The unnamed main character is self centered and a bit bizarre. She is not very likable or remotely relatable. Perhaps it is the generational gap, but this story was tedious and failed to hold my interest. I glazed over so many times that it took forever to get through it. Frankly didn’t care what happened to her. Wasted purchase.

Loved her last book and this one did not disappoi!
Miranda July makes me feel normal. My inner voice would hang out with her’s. I loved her films and particularly her last book and this one was up there with it. The offbeat thinking and a character who is slightly unhinged but self aware make for good consumption. I do personally get a bit squirmy with sexual content and that was here as it is in most of her work, but it is what it is and she is just an author that is more comfortable with that than I am. Still a top pick for me.

I haven’t read Miranda July in years, and the re-discovery is life-altering. The book is stunning.
