Little details that make the story great
As a teenager who loves reading about fantasy and horror, this book was perfect. I loved the eerie vibes they describe Brookline like and the photos make the setting easier to imagine. The words are at the perfect level for a teen of ages 11-15, not too hard but still very descriptive.

5 out of 5 :)
Imagine being in a dark asylum, surrounded by haunting photographs and strange mysteries. This book really brings this fictional scenario to life. Asylum, by Madeleine Roux, is a wonderfully scary read. I’ve always enjoyed horror/mystery books, and this is the perfect definition of those genres. In this book, we see from the point of view of Dan, a 16 year old boy, who goes to New Hampshire for a college prep program. However, the students are forced to stay in an old asylum, as the regular dorms aren’t available. The book starts off fairly normal, but slowly becomes more sinister. This makes the book far more enjoyable, as we see the characters going more and more insane. The main characters, Abby, Jordan, and Dan did have quirky and unique personalities. The struggles and anxiety that all the characters felt was very real and easy to grasp. Despite this, the characters were a bit too cliché for my taste. They also had very animated personalities and actions, such as those of cartoon characters. It made them somewhat unrealistic, but the emotion was still there. One thing I loved about this book were the realistic issues that allowed the reader to connect with the characters. I got to see the characters face problems like social anxiety, dealing with homophobia from family members, and feeling like you don’t belong. Some of these issues really connected with me, and it’s amazing to be able to connect your own life to a book. This is a wonderful book for all teens and adults, and really helps the reader get a grasp of social issues that they may or may not experience. Not only was this book entertaining, but it was also a learning experience. Another thing I adored about this book were the photographs that were inside. While reading, you got to see disturbing and strange photos that correlated with the story, whether it was a picture of an old asylum room, or a photo of old, long-gone nurses. Each photo told a million stories, and really got the readers thinking. In conclusion, this book was fantastic, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who’s interested in mystery and horror. Although it's not the best book I’ve ever read, it is definitely worth the read. I’ve never read a book that incorporates regular struggles into a horror/fantasy land so smoothly. 5 out of 5 stars.
