unexpecred choices

very exciting suspense with characters you already know. it was interesting to see how pip has come to terms with what happened and how the case unfolds. that being said I am not a fan of how the author chose to end pip’s story and I wish we had seen how pip came to deal with her mental block in more detail.

A compelling mystery with good characterization!

“As Good as Dead” by Holly Jackson had so many plot twists and surprises that it had my heart pounding as I flipped through the pages. People looking for a good read should consider this book as it is filled with a fun and compelling mystery and mission for the main character. There were points where I genuinely believed that the main character, Pippa Fitz-Amobi, would fail after all of her hard work, but her determination prevailed. The images of the evidence used in this story really helped me visualize what Pip was seeing. I also have a newfound appreciation for Ravi Singh, who was willing to risk everything for Pip. When I first saw the title of the story and cover of the story, it made me wonder if it was a specific metaphor. But I also knew that the covers of the books in the “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” series often have a direct meaning to the story. After reading the book, I now understand the clever incorporation of duct tape in the cover. Watching the aftermath of the trauma that Pip experienced in the book written before this was heartbreaking. The enjambment and visual imagery using words on the page are creatively used to make readers feel what Pip was feeling during her times of distress. The expert writing in this story also helped me sympathize with Pip and her varying emotions toward Max Hastings, Stanley Forbes, and Charlie Green. I also understood the moral dilemma that she faced against Charlie because he was doing what in his eyes believed was right. The parallels between Pip and Charlie made me wonder where their character arcs would go. Most of Pip’s actions can be explained because of how emotionally damaged she was after experiencing a traumatic event, but I think that there are still a lot of loopholes in the plot. For example, calling 911 instead of Pip doing what she did to Jason would have been the most intelligent thing to do. I understand the whirlwind of emotions that she likely experienced, but there are definitely better ways that Pip could have thought of, especially with her shown intelligence throughout the series. I did enjoy reading about Pip and Ravi’s plan after this, though. Pip’s intelligence and determination conflict with her vulnerabilities where she wonders if what she is doing is right and Ravi always reassures her, making me appreciate both his humor and encouragement. After seeing how their story ended it only made me want to read another sequel or book in this series. The ending felt a bit unsatisfying and rushed, but I appreciated the closure after seeing Ravi’s text at the end of the story. Overall, “As Good as Dead” was an enjoyable read for me because of its plot twists, enjambment, and characterization, but there are still some areas where I think could be improved. Despite this, the story was still filled with compelling characters and plot twists that still make this book an enjoyable read.
