Let’s start off by saying how much I enjoyed the magic in this book! The author did a great job at creating a world that felt fantastical yet real and so much farther from the mainland than you would think. The book just reads well with information given on local lore and how their magic works while character development is happening simultaneously. Jack and Adaira’s connection creates a feeling of hopeful tension throughout even when you are unsure of where things are going.

A beautiful historical fantasy
A River Enchanted Every time I start to read this book, the temperature drops outside, and the breeze is strong. I feel the Scottish Wind calling me home. A River Enchanted is a beautifully written book, with elemental spirits, and a hint of mystery. The romance is soft like a breeze or like the rolling tide. It is a tale of coming back home. Jack Tamerlaine is a Bard, called back to his home to help solve the mystery of girls going missing in Cadence. Adaira is the Laird of Cadence and Jacks’ childhood enemy. The two work together to call to the Spirits of the Isle to help find the girls. The pacing of the book is fantastic. The plot keeps the reader engaged. The side characters have substance and are a great addition to the story. I would give this book 4.5 stars. A River Enchanted is book one of Elements of Cadence Duology. The second book is called A Fire Endless, which was released in 2022. A River Enchanted does contain adult content. Trigger warnings The story contains assault, kidnapping, parental death, loss of children (stillbirth), as well as sexual content. Everything Rebecca Ross writes is an automatic buy. QUOTES: “But alas, hearts are made to be broken, aren’t they bard?” “If they must break,” Jack said, “then they break and remake themselves into stronger vessels.” —————————————————— “…I realized music would always be more important to her, so I tried to turn myself into stone. To not feel anything. But now I realize that is better to live, to feel and have a clean break than be half-dead and cold, cracked from resentment.”

Such a Beautiful Book
I loved this one so much. I loved how it swept me away into a different world from the first page to the last. I hated putting it down. The characters and their development and growth was all so beautiful and well done. The ending broke my heart, I wanted things to end different, but I know better by now in my reading journey than to always expect a nice ending wrapped with a cute little bow on top to help me sleep peacefully at night; instead, I rushed out to Barnes and Noble this past week when I still had a quarter of the book left because I'm so ready to see where this story goes 💚 Amazing work Rebecca Ross. You have a way with words and you write so beautifully, equal parts leaving me breathless and part yelling "I KNEW IT!!" at the same time 💚

Beautiful
I unexpectedly was immediately drawn in to this story. I had it borrowed from the library and placed an order to purchase it and it’s sequel after reading 5 chapters. The author paints brilliant images with her words, and I felt like I was on this Scottish-inspired isle every time I picked up the book. There was some Scottish dialect which I had to look up to better understand as I went along. Multi-POV rounded out the story from all sides, and an unexpected ending that has left me heartbroken and ready for the second book! My favorite quote, that I had to read a few times over because I loved it so… “I am but a verse inspired by your chorus, and I will follow you until the end, when the isle takes my bones and my name is nothing more than a remembrance on a headstone, next to yours.”

Amazing
I was trying to find a book to get back into after not reading for a few years. This was the one that got me out of my rut. It was so easy to be engulfed into the world the author created. Definitely would recommend.

This book does not get enough attention
5/5 stars! All of the stars!!!! This book does not get enough attention – in my opinion. A River Enchanted was a beautiful weaving of Scottish folklore, fantasy (and magic) and a little bit of spooky horror (though not the gorey kind) all into one amazing beautiful book. This is one of those books that I feel like no matter what I write here, my words will not do justice to the beauty that is in this book. Some would say that the prose is “poetic” and I guess there is kind of a poetic feel to it. But I think more in terms of it being beautiful, enchanting, and completely engaging. From the first chapter I was completely sucked into this tale – and that was before we even really learned what the real story is. Ross’s characters – much like the landscape of her story – feel both 100% realistic and magical all at the same time. They were full of life and emotion, engaging and always demanded my full attention. The atmosphere of this book was perfect. It was magical but also spooky and unknown. These children started going missing and no one knows how or why or where they are. Both the plot and the characters feel incredibly dynamic – even when you think they aren’t, Ross throws something in to change that. Just when you start feeling comfortable and complacent with what’s going on, something else happens to turn this story on it’s head. And that ending! WOW what an incredible ending. It made me think things about certain characters, which I did not expect at all. I read a lot, and usually once I finish a book I think fondly of it, but I also move on quickly to the next book. This is a book that has stayed fresh in my mind since I finished reading it. I can’t get those characters and that scenery out of my head, and I don’t want to. I may have to move my tbr around to get in the 2nd book of this duology when it comes out because I NEED more in this world. This book has also caused me to consider moving up Sisters of Sword and Song – which has been judging me from the bookshelf for far too long – higher up on my tbr … As I said, words can’t really do justice to all the things that A River Enchanted made me feel however, I hope that this is enough.

Yessss!
Duologies hit that sweet spot and I love them so much. This first part of a duology in specific is soooo good. I'm obsessed with anything Ross writes!
