Mary E. Pearson's Dance of Thieves is a new YA novel in the New York Times bestselling Remnant Chronicles universe, in which a reformed thief and the young leader of an outlaw dynasty lock wits in a battle that may cost them their lives—and their hearts. When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty's resentment and anger. At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfill their own secret missions.

Dance of Thieves

Today I will be reviewing the novel Dance of Thieves which was written by Mary E. Pearson. She is a New York Times Bestselling author of the book Remnant Chronicles. I have personally never read that book but after reading Dance of Thieves it is likely I will in the future. The book is 505 pages so it took me about a month to finish although I was never bored as I flipped through the pages. The two main characters Jase and Kazi have very different personalities. Kazi was originally a street thief but turned into a queen's guard. Over the course of the book she had to go through many difficult emotions such as depression and loss. Even though she was a thief she still maintains a sense of great loyalty and positivity. Jase is appointed head of Tor's Watch which is an island in need of many fixes. Even though he prefers to do the work by himself, he often relied on Kazi for support. They both face similar yet different challenges which bring them together. Multiple lessons can be learned from the quotes throughout the story. Two of my favorites were " Sometimes you can begin to know everything you lost until someone shows you what you may have had." and " Truth that comes late is as useful as a meal to a deadman.". The first quote taught me to live in the moment and not focus on what else I may want. The second quote reinstated how important it is to speak the truth when you have the chance to do so. Jase and Kazi's relationship also taught me not only the significance of a friend but also how unlikely friendships can be the best ones. The book's chapters are written from Jase and Kazis perspectives at different points throughout the novel. Some of my other favorite writers do this. I think it helps the reader further understand what the characters are thinking and feeling. I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys a suspenseful plot and developing characters. I would not recommend stopping in the middle of a chapter, as the plot may get confusing. On the back of the novel the next book Vow of Thieves is shown. This is a book that I may be inclined to read in the future. Overall this book is not a quick read, although it is extremely interesting and captivating for most audiences.

Good for a younger audience

I wasn't too sure I wanted to read this duology since the Remnant Chronicles were so slow and irrelevant. This book is better, but the plotline is very similar to the previously triology. Will finish the duology but wouldn't recommend it top of my head to adults, perhaps teenagers.

An unexpected treasure

I struggled to get into it in the first few chapters, there were so many character names. But it quickly turned very fast paced & I ended up not being able to put it down. The ending was happy & left me wanting to read the second right away. the characters are loveable & I adore a smart FMC.

Not Totally Worth the Hype

Not the best book I've ever read but not the worst either. The writing itself was very good and I liked the universe the author set the book in. The Ballenger family was a fun concept and it reminded me a lot of the Shelbys from Peaky Blinders. I felt like the plot at its core was a very basic and minimal one, perhaps a little too simple, as the story and pacing dragged on a ton for the majority of the book. I almost considered DNFing the book a few times because I didn't feel all that invested in the story or the characters. Jase and Kazi themselves are pretty decent characters. I think they would've had a lot more potential if they were written for a NA audience instead of a YA one. I enjoyed their bickering but didn't feel like enough time had passed in the story for Jase to constantly confess his love. It felt a little cringe to me. Certain acts of betrayal were easily smoothed over and forgotten (especially at the end) that also felt annoying to me. Unsure if I'm invested enough in the story to read the sequel.

Could NOT put it down

I finished this in a day and a half. I loved the story, so much detail and world building. The touch of romance was the perfect amount, sweet but not smutty. The story flows so well it really was impossible to stop myself from reading. Short chapters, so it’s easy to just keep going. LOVE IT!!!
