A Malaysian spin on Little Red Riding Hood from the critically acclaimed author of The Girl and the Ghost, Hanna Alkaf. Courage is the strongest magic there is. On Hamra's thirteenth birthday, she receives nothing but endless nagging and yet another errand to run in the Langkawi jungle that looms behind her home. No one has remembered her special day. And so, stifled and angry, Hamra ignores something she shouldn't, the rules of the jungle. Always ask permission before you enter. Hamra walks boldly in. Never take what isn't yours. Hamra finds the most perfect jambu and picks it. Of course, rules exist for a reason, and soon an enormous weretiger is stalking her dreams, demanding payment for her crimes and Hamra embarks on a quest deep into the jungle to set things right. For fans of Ikegna and A Tale Dark and Grimm comes a story of a brave heroine, a beguiling villain, fantastical worlds, magical adventures, and a journey that will remind you that hope, friendship, and love endures all.

Engrossing take on Malaysian folktale

For all of us who have been totally engrossed in stories of other culture’s folktales ever since Rick Riordan gave us Percy Jackson, here’s one from Malaysia. On her 13th birthday, which should have been a happy day for Hamra, it is anything but. Due to Covid, her physician mom is constantly working, and her tourist director dad is now delivering supplies, and everyone except her best friend Ilyas has totally forgotten her birthday. Hamra goes into the jungle to pick her grandmother’s favorite fruit, but due to her foul mood does not ask the jungle gods if it’s OK she take them. Suddenly a weretiger appears and demands that to prevent him from punishing her for her oversight, she must help him remember when he was human and the story continues with the adventures she and Ilyas have in their attempt to do that.

A solid read for middle grade students

Following Hamra through her journey to help the Weretiger reclaim his humanity was an interesting journey. The story was an interesting blend of fairy tales and emotional journeys. Not only is Hamra dealing with the physical and mental challenges presented by the journey with the Weretiger but she is also dealing with the emotional ones presented through dealing with changing life circumstances and maturing into a young woman. An interesting read that middle readers can enjoy and empathize with.
