Queer Horror is back!

Whoa the pages of this book jumped out and came to life, I loved Camp Damascus and so I was expecting Chuck Tingle's new horror book to hit it out of the part again and Chuck didn't disappoint. The horror in this is palpable, the descriptions of the monsters was so clear that I felt the dread myself as I was reading this book. The way that Chuck Tingle builds tension should be studied because I have at the edge of my seat waiting for what happened next. The characters were lovable and you wanted to root for them. The gore in this was surprising, I'm normally not a squeamish person but there was a certain scene in a bathroom that made me yell out load because of how intense it was, something that no book has done in the last two years. This book deals with homophobia, both internalized and from outside and it does it so well. The trauma of queer people is described in such a real and heart wrenching way that I very quickly understood character's choices and motivations. I do see Chuck Tingle as a master of Queer Horror as Misha is in Bury Your Gays.

Chuck Tingle Slays Me

Ok Chuck Tingle knocked it out of the park with this one! I know I talked smack about not liking Camp Damascus but did I love the reference to it in Bury Your Gays? You better believe it ๐Ÿ˜Œ But this was great, incredible even! I feel like this book had everything, I loved this book so much I made a playlist about it. I didnโ€™t rate it 5 stars just because I feel like it took a while for the action to really kick in and then the ending felt a bit rushed. Oh and I feel like the script parts were a fun vessel for the B plot but I donโ€™t feel like it was all that successful. Anyways this was so gross and visceral and such campy F U N though! OH! And the book cover being relevant to the plot? Chefโ€™s kiss! Iโ€™m so thrilled I gave this a chance despite my trepidation. Stop what youโ€™re doing & read this. Perfect for fans of queer slasher horror & those of us who absolutely hate AI.

Excellent thriller tangled with media world faults

This was my first Chuck Tingle book and definitely wont be my last! I dont normally read these genre but the description really had me interested and I'm glad I checked this one out. The entire novel is well crafted with twists and turns to keep the reader questioning the truth and endgame. The main character is engaging and someone you really root for and his horror creations he's facing are unique and unlike anything from current horror/thriller media. I think this book has a great underlying tone regarding the overuse and overtaking of media by AI, from art to writing full books its clear that one of Tingle's points was to highlight this. Additionally its a great play on the overused (even in 2024) trope of killing off your gay characters or putting them through some other tragedy. While I cant break down all the nuances myself layered in this one I can absolutely recommend it. An excellent and fun read!

Best lamb ever!

Being in the splash zone when someone is Wile E. Coyoteโ€™d piano style isnโ€™t the strangest thing thatโ€™s happened to Misha this week. Heโ€™s been nominated for an Oscar and heโ€™s probably about to lose his job. Oh, and a bunch of the characters heโ€™s written are out to get him. If heโ€™d chosen any genre besides horror, this might not be quite as scary, but here we are. Misha is dealing with the evils of AI in creative spaces and the unscrupulousness of the entertainment industry, with a good dose of past trauma intruding on the present thrown in for good measure. โ€œItโ€™s no fun when your plotline goes sideways, is it?โ€ Supporting Misha through the ups, downs and โ€˜OMG, weโ€™re gonna die!โ€™ are his boyfriend, Zeke, whoโ€™s the kind of too good to be true that you really want to be true, and his aromantic and asexual best friend, Tara. I loved Zeke and Tara in their supporting roles and spent much of my time with them hoping they wouldnโ€™t be collateral damage. I needed more page time with Tara, though. There arenโ€™t enough asexual characters, especially ones with personalities that bound off the page. Taking place in the same universe and after the events of Camp Damascus, this book has the body horror, the heart and the WTF that I was looking for. I didnโ€™t even attempt to try to figure out what was going on when the impossible started showing up. I was happy to sit back and enjoy the ride, and enjoy it I did. This was such a fun blend of โ€˜whatโ€™s going to happen next?โ€™ and โ€˜I need to see that movie!โ€™ I wanted to watch every TV series and movie described, even the sequels. Especially the sequels. Best lamb ever! Thank you so much to NetGalley and Titan Books for the opportunity to read this book.

LOVED

This book was such a treat! Weird thing to say about a horror book, but it's true. I enjoyed this book on audio, and I might be biased in saying this butI feel like this was the perfect way to consume this book. I am not much of a horror fan, can't watch scary movies and typically don't read horror, but I found this to be so good. It was shockingly funny at times, while slightly gory in some parts, but overall I had a very good time reading this book. I thought the content was thoughtful. I found the "bury your gays" concept to be explained fully, something that I was not fully aware of. I loved all the queer representation in this book, and appreciated the main characters own growth within this story and theme. I also loved how the author took on the thought of utilizing artificial intelligence in screenwriting and what sort of impact that it could have. It read more like a book about social commentary with a side of horror, which was the perfect mix to me! I enjoyed this book very much, and look forward to reading more of this author in the future. Thanks to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an advanced copy of this book. All opinions within this review are my own.

Unique and well written

Misha is a screenwriter with his first Oscar nomination and feels ready to take on Hollywood by storm. He is summoned to the studio and told that he needs to kill off his gay characters in a show that he has been working on and is quite passionate about. If he doesnโ€™t want to kill them off then they cant be gay. Misha doesnโ€™t like either option, and wants to stick to his original story. The cost of doing this might cost him more than he could ever imagine. This was a well written, beat the clock type story that is best going into without knowing what is happening. The discovery is one of the best parts. Tingle delivers a smart story that not only takes shots at greedy corporations but also at stereotypes and homophobia in the media. This has some subtle humor, well written dialogue and some very horrific scenes that were terrifying and gory. I loved the tension that was created by giving us insight into Mishaโ€™s childhood. Those chapters effectively led up to the climactic ending and delivered a unique horror novel that I will not forget.

In Chuck We Trust

5/5โœจ This was my first Tingle book and absolutely loved it. I was about to listen and read this title and let me tell you, the narrators were amazing! This was so much more than a quirky story about how Hollywood always kills off the queer character. It represents the power of chosen family, being true to yourself to live your most authentic life, and doing what you know is right, even when the world says it is "wrong" by the masses. The zany characters and vivid descriptions of the situations, horror, and environment really made this a top read this year! If you are looking for a unique and thrilling read with a dash of horror, this is your next read.
